Can you make DIY flavours for a sodastream?

DH drinks vodka and sparkling water, often with lime juice. For his birthday I was thinking of getting him a sodastream or similar, in part to cut down on the plastic bottles of sparkling water he buys but also because he likes to experiment and making his own mixes for things.

Can you do this with a sodastream or do you have to buy their readymade flavours?

It just puts bubbles in liquids so you can do whatever you want.

The sodastream essentially makes just fizzy water, what you add to it to flavour that fizzy water is up to you

I’d be interested in this. I’m looking at a Sodastream alternative due to the issues with Sodastream. I’ve found alternatives for carbonisation but not flavourings https://www.cjpme.org/fs_244

In short mistreatment of Palestinians, primarily women.

With the sodastream flavours you still just make plain fizzy water first and then add the flavour to it at the end. You can use it to fizz any liquid you like but you need to be careful with anything that contains sugars as it can spray all over your kitchen unless you unscrew the bottle very slowly. I rarely buy the flavours and have experimented with my own drinks. My current favourite is to cold brew flavoured green tea and then fizz that up. Another favourite is to infuse fruit into water before fizzing it. I've even fizzed up white wine before now.

There are several alternatives to SodaStream and also companies such as Co2You that will deliver carbon dioxide canisters direct to your door for less than you'd pay in the shops.

Thanks all, I haven't been near a sodastream since I was a child so had forgotten how they work - I think in my mind it was a bit like a tassimo where you have to insert a pod to make it do anything 😂

Carbonated green tea sounds lovely, @Turboislander - I sometimes do similar adding cold brew to sparkling water as an alternative to alcohol so will definitely be experimenting with that!

You can use syrups you make or buy I make a blackberry syrup / cordial in the autumn and always feel sad when it runs out

I put squash in with my soda stream instead of the flavours and it works just the same.

@volingaround Yes, it was one of my Dry January discoveries. We had a couple of nice bottlegreen cordials left over from Christmas as well and I found that adding a splash of one of those into the fizzy tea made a drink that was interesting/tasty enough to substitute for an alcoholic drink. Are you going to be using his present more than him? 😂

We have a sodastream. I’ve never bought any of the syrups. We just use regular squash or fruit juice or whatever we want. It’s just fizzy water and yes, it saves a small fortune.

We did used to buy the mixers lime Coke but found them disappointing tbh. So now we stick to water, then add it to juice / cordial etc. I love a gin with elderflower cordial and sparking water! (goes off to buy more gin😂)

Someone on here was talking about stem ginger in syrup and lime slices. You could try that with tap water?
