Where can I go on holiday for 3 days?

I’ve messed up with the dog arrangements. My home boarding dog walker can only have the dog for 3 nights as he is super good, my dog loves him and he’s very popular. I should have booked him 6 months ago. Kennels are not an option.

He can do 3 nights from Monday to Thursday morning (not next week but a week in the summer holidays ).

I live in Northamptonshire so not too close to an airport. Also, I don’t want to spend one day travelling, one day sightseeing and another travelling back to make sure we’re home late Wednesday evening so that I can pick up the dog on Thursday morning.

Also, no local family to help out and my close friend’s son is allergic to dogs so no help there either (this is to stop the drip feed later on).

DH has already taken that week off work (he can’t change it so we’re limited to that particular week) so we can go away somewhere. Is there any epic U.K. city break to go to that is NOT

Edinburgh
London
Bath
Oxford
Cambridge
Newcastle
York

Not spa break
Not golf break

We have a teenager as well, done CentreParks, done Bluestone.

I’m totally stuck and am not sure what to do. We can book a U.K. holiday cottage with the dog later in the summer but I am so cross with myself. Teenager is doing A levels this year so I promised them a nice holiday and I’ve left it too late and feel I’ve fd it up.

Any ideas?

Amsterdam - very short flight from the UK & very close to the airport

ADCisntme · 29/04/2025 12:52

He has two weeks booked off.

We can do 96 hours without dog and then go away the next week with dog. So I am looking for ideas without the dog.

Except this is the only week my DH can take off.

Oh I thought you said you had another week later in the summer where you said you'd hire a cottage with the dog. I was suggesting you swap your plans if your boarder is available for thr later week

One of you and your child goes on holiday. One of you stays behind with the dog. I wouldn’t be restricting my child who I’d promised a great holiday to a 3 day UK break because of a dog.

Done Amsterdam. Done Paris.

I am so sorry, I’m being very negative!

How far away are you from Birmingham airport? You could get a flight from there to Newquay, or Jersey/Guernsey, which would be short journeys.

Brighton
bristol
cardiff
a bit out there and not a city but Deal is really nice too

You can’t have “done” Paris , there’s so much to do

Delatron · 29/04/2025 12:59

I often go abroad for 3 nights. Just get an early flight. Lisbon, Rome, Amsterdam. I’d much rather do a city break then drive for hours and stay in a UK city.

Or I’d take the dog to N. France for the week.

Chester and stay at hollies farm shop lodges with hot tubs. They’re exceptional and close to most things. Belfast is nice or Dublin?

Delatron · 29/04/2025 13:02

Just seen you don’t want Amsterdam. I’d get an earlier flight to Lisbon. 3 nights is plenty. We did this last October and it was amazing. Short transfer from the airport the other end. We were there by lunchtime.

Kind of. But we are restricted to staying in the U.K. that week for certain reasons so yes that would be a good time to go.

We loved Rotterdam, but not sure how easy it is to get to.

Do you specifically want a city break? We had a good time in the Peak District doing some climbing, kayaking, cycling. Loads of youth hostels in nice spots.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/04/2025 13:04

we just went to Paris for 3 nights. Totally doable and pretty easy flights wise

Delatron · 29/04/2025 13:05

Lyon is gorgeous and my favourite French city if you don’t fancy Paris. Very short flight.

CoCoJones26 · 29/04/2025 13:05

Just take the dog!! A narrow boat holiday for the 3 of you, plus the dog.
Everyone makes mistakes, try to forget about it and just get a UK break booked!

Vatsallfolks · 29/04/2025 13:06

As someone who lives on a narrow boat WITH a dog… you can’t get better.. if nervous there re plenty of doggy life vests and canals are about 3ft deep (plus mud😂) .. a week is good for re 4 counties ring.. seethe midlands in its fabulous glory .. no traffic great pubs .. lots of locks to do honestly it’s so amazing we decided to live on board permanently !

Oooh - what did you do in Rotterdam? What is there to do and see? Eurostar from St Pancras. Easy. We went past it in the way to Amsterdam.

Ok. You’ve all been very helpful. But I would like to go somewhere without the dog. She has chronic separation anxiety which means I can’t even go to the loo without her kicking off. She goes quite mental if I go into a shop and leave her with DH outside.

She is very mellow otherwise and loves her home away from home at the dog walker’s house.

But I would like a few days doing things I wouldn’t normally do when the dog is around.

Norfolk Broads…take the dog and go boating. I’ve done this twice (with and without the dog) when my girls were teens. It’s still their ‘best holiday’ and they now take their own children 💖

BumbleBeegu · 29/04/2025 13:11

Sorry OP…cross post about you not wanting to take the dog 👍🏻

Energe · 29/04/2025 13:13

Uk breaks cost as much as going abroad. I would check out Birmingham airport on Skyscanner and fly for an hour or two rather than driving to Bristol or somewhere

Rhdyghdh · 29/04/2025 13:15

I second these. Would also check any offers on the Eurostar for Paris/Brussels or if in the South Eadt and the whether is good look at a day trip on the ferry. If you can take the dog there is a pet lounge on some of the ferries.

Isle of Wight also great in good weather.
