First communion present

I've been invited to a meal to celebrate a first communion. They are an Irish Catholic family - living in the UK. It's a girl (quite a girly girl). What present should I take? It's someone I work with. I know the family but not well.

Don't know about the UK but it's money in a card here in Ireland. The only people I know of that give an actual present would be a godparent and even then most give money.

@honeyrider how much are we talking? £20 ? There's 2 of us going to the meal so is it more like you cover the cost of the meal - which would be about £50....

Yes, I’d give £50 if two of you are going to a meal out. I’m also in Ireland though, so not sure what’s customary in the UK.

When we were in this position we just gave money but the after party was at their house not a meal out.
DH is the childs Godfather even though we are not Catholic so we gave a cheque for a reasonable amount but as a ordinary guest I think £50 would be fine

I was listening to a discussion on this topic on a national Irish radio recently and heard that €20 - €25 in a card is the average amount in a card even for a couple though aunts/uncles and grandparents may give a bit more if inclined.

I'm going to a communion by myself this weekend and will be giving €50 because I have been his childminder for nearly 8 years so have a very close relationship with him.

Maybe £40 - £50 if going out to a restaurant.

That's really helpful thank you.
