Air conditioner Unit

I live in the SE / London area and once again we are hit hardest by rising temperatures- and it’s only the end of April! We’ve tried all sorts of mitigations (shutters, blackout curtains) but I think the time has come to invest in a portable AC unit for the front bedroom. This is where DH and I sleep and gets all the sun from the afternoon onwards.

Does anyone have personal recommendations for something quiet, efficient and practical? A link would be even better.

The rooms at the back face our shady garden and only gets the sun in the morning so don’t have the same problem

Thank you!

I don’t think the portable ones work well at all.

If you own your home I'd just install a wall mounted unit, it's not as expensive as you think! We've had one in our bedroom for almost a decade and is possibly the best home improvement we've done.

We have two portable ones. One upstairs in our bedroom and it has been a godsend as it means we sleep well. It's a quiet one but still makes quite a noise but you get used to it quite quickly. The only arguments we have over it is that I feel 18 is cold enough but DH puts it onto 17. I just change it when I go to bed 😀.
We have one downstairs which keeps the dining room at a nice temperature as we have a conservatory so no opening windows except in there. It helps keep the animals cool as well as us.

Thank you

Any particular model recommendations? I’m disturbed that one pp says they aren’t that efficient so I want to get one that is!

Id never thought of a walk-mounted unit, that’s something to investigate. I’m much keener than my DH so I’d have to justify the cost

I would love to know which one is good too, I’ll buy it now!

I can't give any recommendations, as mine is over 10 yrs old now. But what I would say, is that none of them are "quiet". It's just not possible due to the way they work. As a pp said, you do get used to it, but something to be aware of. I just see it as, the noise disturbs my sleep less than being hot and sweaty would!

I'd love a wall mounted unit but can't have it due to limitations on where the outside part would go. But if that's something that would work for you, I personally would go for that over a portable one. It would be much quieter and way more efficient.

The portable units have their limits. I bought the highest BTU I could get at the time, which theoretically can go down to 17. But when we've had heatwaves of 30+, it just can't manage it. It gets down to 23/24, which is better, but not perfect.
