Breastfeeding and having a drink?

We go on holiday soon with our 6m baby EBF and I don’t pump. I have researched but found very varied information, with some saying milk would never be more alcoholic than an orange juice unless you were absolutely hammered and others saying wait 2/3 hours before feeding after each unit of alcohol.

We are going all inclusive and drinking is not the main appeal at all but I wondered if I could have say, a drink with lunch and dinner and then maybe one mid afternoon too - with lots of water in between?

I can’t find clear definitive information so advice on what you would do would be appreciated.

Many thanks

There is no more alcohol in your breastmilk than in your blood. It’s fine to have a drink, just don’t over do it.

Yes absolutely fine as long as you can hold your baby. Just no bed sharing. You won't want much as parenting with a hangover is horrendous 😂

So do you think 3 drinks (either 3 glasses of wine, 3 cocktails, or a mix) would be fine over the course of say 10 hours with lots of food and water too?

The advice I was given was "if you can find the baby, you can feed the baby" 😂

Absolutely fine milk wise as long as you feel okay to parent! ❤️

The first time I had a glass of red wine with my EBF was when he was five months old; it is also the first time he slept through!

applegingermint · 28/05/2025 15:41

It’s absolutely fine in moderation.

If you want to be extremely careful then one way to do it is to breastfeed, then immediately have a drink. By the time you feed again in c 2 hours the alcohol will have left your system.

CapitalAtRisk · 28/05/2025 15:43

I used to have a drink while I was breastfeeding. That way, it had the longest time to pass out of my system before the next feed.

Mind you DS slept through the night from an early age, so it wasn't really an issue.

Scottishskifun · 28/05/2025 15:43

Absolutely fine OP just have plenty of water to keep hydrated as milk will become more watery/thirst quencher if its hot.

CapitalAtRisk · 28/05/2025 15:44

I did go away (without DS, he was six months old) for the night on a friend's hen do, I pumped and dumped first thing the next morning.

Spaced out odd drinks will be fine. If you're in a suitable condition to look after baby you'll be fine to feed. Like others said just don't bedshare. And be prepared to take it slow, my first drink after having baby I did feel hammered despite a good tolerance before pregnancy. I wouldn't have been able to have 3 drinks simply because I wouldn't have felt safe in charge of baby if I had because my tolerance was so much lower.

One standard drink p/day is the general guide, but no alcohol is best. I found this as well:
