Hip pain. Please can you help me work out what to expect from GP?

Pain where left hip is. It started 6 months ago. I assumed it was a random ‘niggle’ but it has never gone away.

No pain if I press the skin but the pain is ‘inside’ if that makes sense. Not sure how to word that to the GP. Sometimes it feels like a warm burning sensation at times.

I wake up very stiff in that hip. I sort of have to ‘brace’ myself when moving out of bed and clench my teeth - that started about 4 weeks ago.

Most days I am on my feet from 4am to 10pm, with little to no rest. But this isn’t fatigue. It’s genuine pain and only in the left hip. I am a carer so very busy all the time and can’t be accused of sitting on my bum too much!

No back pain.

Pain is worse if I sit down for 5 minutes and get up again. Not at all painful if I remain active and on my feet. I notice a stiffness when I get out the car for example because I’ve been sat down.

No pain for example if I extend my leg outwards for example but extremely painful to direct my leg inwards. Bending that left leg in a crossed leg position makes me feel physically sick because of the hip pain, that’s the worst position I think.

I am a non smoker. Non drinker. But fatter than I should be but a clothes size 12 and always physically active. Haven’t had any injuries. Age 27.

Only medical history is gallbladder and appendix removal, psoriasis on one ankle and asthma that rarely bothers me at all nowadays.

Please help me phrase what to say and expect from my upcoming GP appointment and what it could possibly be?

Would you want an x ray or blood test if you were me?

I am so exhausted I can hardly string this post together so please be patient with my poor grammar here! Thanks so much for any advice

It really is starting to slow me down at certain times. I can’t just ‘get up and go’. I find myself refraining from stopping to rest even if I can because I know I’ll feel so stiff when I stand again

Just show the GP exactly what you wrong here. Honestly the easiest way

Thank you. Would you show them or just read it aloud? Since they seem to like asking questions between each answer you give from experience

I had similar. They thought it might be bursitis. I can't remember if they concluded it was or not, but they sent me to a physio and they did some deep massages, told me my legs were different lengths and to wear risers, and gave me some exercises.
Much to my scepticism this has pretty much cleared it. Occasionally it flares up for a couple of days, but repeating the exercises seems to settle it down again quickly.
I do notice when it flares up often coincides with putting on a bit of weight too.

I get this too. It's in the leg that I had a knee op on when I was younger. My right leg is about an inch shorter and for the last 2-3 years I've been getting burning like you describe.
I think it's arthritis as it's worse when it's cold or rainy. I've not been to the GP about it because I'm not sure if they can actually do anything!

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/04/2025 19:52

Sounds like me. Arthritis of the hips. Both sides

was told to lose weight - politely - I was a bit of a porker

5s off. Hope still ache some days. But guessing better for the weight loss

hip replacement is the only option

I would assume he would send you for an x-ray (to rule out the unusual) and then send you to a Physio.
It would be unusual for you to have arthritis at your age. I would assume that it's muscular rather than anything significant. You might have to do some stretching exercises with your left hip.

My Dw has this, leg length discrepancy since birth and it's developed into osteoarthritis and has orthotic shoe to help compensate when walking plus cocodomol, lidocaine patches, nefopam.
Hopefully you find a solution.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 26/04/2025 21:12

Op I hope you find a solution to your problem as a pp said hopefully you're too young to have arthritis.

I have this in my right hip. I've had X-rays and an MRI. Nothing of note. I had a steroid injection which didn't help. I now get by with naproxen and an amazing physio every three weeks which I pay for. Doctors are hopeless with this sort of pain.

ApolloandDaphne · 26/04/2025 21:36

Also I have arthritis elsewhere in my body but not in my hip.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 26/04/2025 23:15

@Mickeychampionwhatgoodami thank you. I'd forgotten about nefopam being a thing.Would be worth a try.

thebluerose · 26/04/2025 23:29

You go to the GP. You say, 'I've been having hip pain, it started six months ago.' Then you go on from there, with him asking you questions, and you answering them. You don't need to memorise an entire spiel.

3luckystars · 26/04/2025 23:31

What shoes are you wearing?

you are on your feet 18 hours a day, your shoes are extremely important.

LittleGreenDragons · 27/04/2025 00:52

Hopefully your GP will check your Vitamin D levels as this can cause hip and shin pains. Every time mine was low my hips were on fire and I couldn't lie on them in bed (or turn over). It's surprising how badly it can affect you when it's low.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/04/2025 10:14

An x ray is prob the first port of call and go from there
