Anyone with knowledge or experience of inguinal hernia?

I initially posted in the dadsnet section but haven't had a response. My poor DH is having to wait for an op on this. It's not strangulated, so NHS won't do anything. We're going private, but he's had other health considerations that have had to be prioritised, meaning that he's been suffering with this for several months now and there's still a wait for this op. Does anyone have experience of this and have any tips for management until the op?

Is he in pain? My youngest (5) currently has one and is waiting for the op. They said if it causes pain to present at the hospital

If it's not painful then you are on the wait list. Depending on size it can be done keyhole. Private it's approx £3k. Don't exert. Eg lifting heavy things. Plenty of info via Google or YouTube. A work colleague had one that was quite large but he put off doing anything. He ended up in surgery and a 14 stitch wound and came back to work too early. The wound became infected so he then had weeks off. He is ok now. Didn't know there was a wait time for private. I presumed a month max since it's a routine op.

Inguinal hernia repairs are routinely done electively in the NHS. Waiting lists are often pretty long though. Depending on what his other medical issues are they may suggest sticking with the NHS - not all private hospitals are well set up for medically complex customers. In the meantime, if the hernia becomes painful/stuck then he should seek medical advice more urgently.

Thanks @Greybeardy , @MrsALambert and @Pedallleur . He isn't on a wait list for the hernia, they've said they won't treat him for it unless it becomes strangulated, so we are going private, and the NHS have finally allowed us to postpone the treatment they're giving him for his other concerns so that we can prioritise it. I'm more looking for any tips about how to manage it while we wait for the private surgery. He's in a lot of discomfort but not pain. It's stopped him though from doing anything, which is hard as he's normally fit and active.

I'm sorry about your son, poor kid! Hope his wait isn't too long.
