How would you adjust your sleep preceding this flight to ensure you slept?

I’ve got a long haul flight, leaving the UK at 11am. I’d like to sleep for most of it for 2 reasons: to pass the time, but importantly to adjust to my new time zone, as it will be about 6am (at my destination) when I land.
Not sure whether to have just a couple hours of sleep the evening before and then try and stay up the rest of the night.
What would you do to ensure you fell asleep on this flight?

I can’t sleep on planes, day or night, but a tip on here helped me adjust. I get Boots over the counter sleepeaze tablets and take them for the first few nights on arrival and when I get back home so at least I am getting a good nights sleep at night.

In your situation, I doubt I would sleep on the plane, so I would plan on having a couple of hours sleep at lunchtime, setting an alarm to wake me up and then go to bed after dinner the first evening and take a sleeping tablet.

No, day time flights are usually noisy. Just stay awake as long as you can when you arrive, try to go to bed at about 8/9pm then wake up and job done. Works well when we do ultra long haul

I don't sleep much on planes - I would just have to battle through and go to bed at 9pm their time the next night and hope i sleep through the night.

I did do an early morning flight east a few weeks ago, but I had to get up at 3.30am to get it, so was pretty tired. I had about 4 hours sleep on and off during the flights, arriving in the early morning their time. I just had to stay awake until the evening. The benefit of that is that I had no jet lag and adjusted to the new time zone really easily.

Are you flying east or west? 11 hour flight plus 6 hours ahead would be 4pm local time, not 6am?

There was a Radio 4 programme last week about ways to cope with jetlag:
