MrsMaryMooFace · 24/04/2025 20:17

We are off to Whitby soon, just the 2 of us, not for the first time BUT would love to hear your recommendations.
Food
Drink
Coffee
Museums
Attractions
For the love of God not the steps 🤣

I should add I am very allergic to all fish and seafood which is a kicker, Husband is not though so happy to visit seafood places if they have safe alternatives.

Hit me with your favourite places please!

The brewery but unfortunately it’s at the top of the steps!

Lounderflounder · 24/04/2025 20:21

The steps are the best bit. The view is great and there's a quirky church that's worth going into at the top. There's the priory up there too which is lovely and has great views.

There's a strange little pie and mash shop that has a WW2 theme if I remember rightly which I quite liked. If you have a few days it's worth doing that part of the coastline. Filey, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes, Runswick Bay, Saltburn.

Virtualhelp · 24/04/2025 20:22

Second the brewery. They do nice pizza there. I didn’t actually find the steps bad, I thought they were a bit underwhelming as I built it up in my head that it was going to be quite physically hard.

twolilacs · 24/04/2025 20:22

I started a thread about Whitby a couple of years ago, don't know how to link to it though. It's called 'Tell me about Whitby' and loads of people responded with some brilliant ideas and suggestions.

Perhaps some bright spark can find it.

HeatedBlanketAllYear · 24/04/2025 20:24

Whitby is fabulous and we were there a couple of weeks ago.
Steps are necessary but take them slowly. Brewery is at the top so worth it.
For fish and chips, my favourite is to keep walking past the magpie (I know, controversial but your purse will thank you) and head as far as you can past the amusements before you get to the beach. The last bar on your left does great fish and chips as well as alcohol and you can sit outside and watch the sea.

edited to say the kids has the loaded nachos and halloumi fries and they were delicious

Sandsend for the beach. The first cafe on the front at the Whitby end with the 2 terraces is the best, the one down by the river is nice but mostly pizzas last time we went.

Goathland for the trains. There's a lovely circular walk - take the road opposite the garage and up past the sports hall. At the campsite turn right into the field and head for the far right corner where you'll find a gate. Follow the path and you'll end up by the church. Turn right to head into the village again and the tea room on the right as you hit the road back to the station is great, very good with allergies.

Or you can walk Goathload to Grosmont and stop at the pub en route. Engine sheds are worth a look.

In Whitby itself, Bothams for cakes / afternoon tea and they have a new cafe at the big bakery unit by Sainsburys. Trenchers is much better than Magpie Cafe for f+c and good for no fish options / allergies we find. Royal Fisheries is usually quieter and owned by the same family so very similar taste.

If you've got the car, we go to Staithes, Pickering, Helmsley is lovely... Beacon Farm ice creams are the best and they have a tea room on the farm and you can visit the cows.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 24/04/2025 20:37

Trenchers!

Deadinsidebutcaffeinated · 24/04/2025 22:00

If they are on, and the weather is nice, do one of the boat trips. Not badly priced and we saw whales and dolphins last summer and fab sunset!
Also recommend the steps up to the church. Lovely view from the churchyard of whitby and looking out to sea and lots of benches. Then up by the Abbey and pizza at the brewery. We preferred this side of Whitby as the streets are cobbled and lovely little shops and lots of history.
Sherlocks cafe over the side was nice and quirky for a coffee/milkshake too though!
The small beach in front of/below the church is apparently good for seaglass and fossils.
Sandsend beach is lovely and walkable from Whitby, we spent many days there and there's a nice cafe along the beach too.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/04/2025 22:03

I am horribly unfit but the steps are easy, they are very shallow. Well worth it.

twolilacs · 24/04/2025 23:47

Thanks @BobGeldoff

Thornrose · 24/04/2025 23:57

Hadley's fish and chips are the best, Trenchers are good too, forget Magpie cafe.

Bothams pork pies are amazing and the butter buns.

I always visit Justin's fudge shop and the old fashioned sweet shop. Oh and buy a lucky duck.

OfDragonsDeep · 25/04/2025 00:03

I love Bothams so much that I order biscuits from their website to eat at home.

MrsMaryMooFace · 25/04/2025 05:35

Thanks guys, some places I've not heard of there, so that's good!

Re the steps, I've done them! I know all about how lovely it is up there, just for various reasons I really struggled coming down so looking to avoid this time.

Watch out for those seagulls.

I got a seafood platter and a gull just dove down and grabbed a piece of it!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/04/2025 07:18

The museum and art gallery in Pannets Park

Marie Antoinette teashop does amazing cheesecake

Don’t bother with the Magpie, it’s perfectly fine but not as special as its reputation suggests.

cluefu · 25/04/2025 07:21

For bars or restaurants, we went last year and enjoyed:

Velveteen (French restaurant)
Cosa Nostra (Italian restaurant, I think it's a former church)
Cafe Montmartre (Parisian style cocktail bar)
Jet Black Jewel (we had brunch here and they do drinks)

Plus lots of lovely pubs, there are so many places in Whitby, love it

The sea life type place is cute but very basic (although cheap).

The Whitby museum is really cool, there is a lot to see!

Captain Cook museum also great!

Believeinmarmite · 25/04/2025 07:22

Take a trip to sandsend beach it's not far at all and it beautiful, the pub to the left ildoea lovely food too (there is only maybe 2 there anyway so easy to find)

Tooty78 · 25/04/2025 07:24

The Hart Inn at Sansend does amazing food, I had the best scampi I have ever eaten there.

We caught the open top bus from the top of the stepd, so could go up then take the bus trip back down!

NewsdeskJC · 25/04/2025 07:42

Do open top

Lots of farm shops stock them locally around here (Warwickshire), to save you some postage!

This. It's just the same as all other Yorkshire fish and chips, it just has better PR. I've given up chasing after 'these fish and chips are best' after making a point of visiting them all over the place, because they've either been nothing special by Yorkshire standards, or in many cases not as good as our very average local suburban chip shop.

If you want to visit the abbey area, which is nice for a wander around and cliff top walk, there's parking up there, no need to walk up and down the steps unless you want to.

If you go to Sandsend, which is lovely, you can walk in the Mulgrave woods up to the castle but only on Wednesdays or at the weekend.

(Mumsnet seems to have banned the posting of links so google Mulgrave woods walk)

I like the Fish Cottage takeaway in Sandsend and I think they did non fish options. There's also lovely sandwich shop but they are insanely popular, have queues and often sell out, so if there's something specific that you want, go early. I've been twice now and once left with nothing and the second time, my third choice of sandwich after a 40 minute wait (which was fine because I went for a walk then had a beer looking at the sea).

(and Mary's sandwich shop Sandsend)

(trigger warning, Mumsnetters who abide by correct use of language may need to steel themselves for the words brekkie, sarnies and burgs)
