Recommendations for places to visit around York

Evening all

We are staying in a holiday home not far from York (30 miles away) this Summer. Can anyone recommend places to visit and things to do. Bonus points for dog friendly. There will be me and dh and our dd tween and our dog. So far I have Whitby on our list and have watched a few YouTubes on it, food looks amazing there.

York itself is a dog friendly city but I don't take mine as he isn't a fan of crowds.
Helmsley is nice for a potter and they have a Lido too
Castle Howard is nice too, not sure of the dog situation there

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 22/04/2025 19:13

Whitby is lovely, but extremely busy. Filey is a really beautiful place with a huge beach and only a small part of it is off-limits to dogs in the summer.
If you like outdoorsy things, North Yorkshire Water Park is a good day out and dog-friendly too. Dalby Forest is worth a trip out to as well.

Which side of York?

Depends a bit which direction you are from York. If it's the coast side, then Whitby, Sandsend, Filey, Flamborough Head...

The moors, Goathland, steam train, all that lot.

Near York there's Castle Howard, the arboretum next door, farming museum, Yorkshire Lavender, Breezy Knees gardens (amazing, and massive), Beningbrough Hall, Newby Hall...

If to the west, various abbeys – Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx Abbey, Riveax – Knaresborough, all of the Dales, er... there's just loads!

We moved to York six years ago and haven't scratched the surface of the things to do.

Brimham rocks is just spectacular! And dog friendly. So much fun for kids and adults to climb around on them like giant climbing frames. Site is huge as well its just formation after formation- one of my favourite places to visit :)

IReallyLoveItHere · 22/04/2025 19:15

Harrowgate is lovely. What side of York are you staying? The NE coast is lovely, tees valley etc.

I suggest asking chatgpt and having a proper chat with it to tweek it's suggestions. It's very good!

Rivypike · 22/04/2025 19:50

Yeah Bolton abbey
Fountains abbey
Jervaulx abbey, know some great walks round there
Hackfall woods
Himalayan gardens
Percival hall
Whitby is nice but the centre is rammed.
Rievaulx Abbey and Terrace
Nidd valley walk to Knaresborough
Some places you can’t take dogs so check before.

Brimham Rocks
Malham Cove
Day trip to Knaresborough
Bolton Abbey

Lounderflounder · 22/04/2025 20:11

Brimham Rocks and Fountains Abbey.

The coast near Whitby. Start at Saltburn, head to Staithes, Runswick Bay, Sandsend, Whitby, Filey.

YorkshireTeaCup · 22/04/2025 20:19

Esholt is nearer Leeds than York really so it will be a long drive to Whitby. Probably about 2hrs? So might be worth looking at somewhere to stop on the way there / back as well for the dog to have a break. Depending on which route you take, Malton or Thirsk would be good stop off points.

YorkshireTeaCup · 22/04/2025 20:21

Don't know if it's dog friendly, but you are only about 30mins from Haworth which is where the Bronte Parsonage was and has a great Bronte museum, plus is generally a nice little village for a day out.

herbaceous · 22/04/2025 21:03

Something unusual is Coldstones Cut, a giant walkable sculpture next to a quarry in the Dales. Near a lovely cafe!

Hoppinggreen · 22/04/2025 21:06

You won't be a million miles from here

DDog used to love it before he got old

Idinahui · 22/04/2025 21:11

There's nice walking around Haworth too. You can get a steam train to it in the summer.

You'll also be really close to saltaire and the fabulous salts mill, all very picturesque and arty.

SerenaSemolena · 22/04/2025 21:20

You're near Leeds. Go to Tropical World. It's lovely, and something for the DD. It's at Roundhay park as well, so somewhere for the dog to let off steam.

RaindropBloom · 22/04/2025 21:37

The Bronte museum sounds fab me and dd would like that and dh can take the dog a wonder.

Sounds like there is loads to do which is great.

I've looked up Betty's tea room in Harrogate is that good?

OP posts:
PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 22/04/2025 21:50

Betty's is lovely, a real treat. I was in the York branch today. It's no good for dogs, thankfully, but there's a garden over the road from Betty's in Harrogate that you could use to walk the dog before and after you visited.

Idinahui · 22/04/2025 21:58

Oh I love tropical world! There's loads to do in Leeds anyway as it goes - theatre, opera, fantastic art gallery.

Not for the dog, granted. But surely you like doing human things too 😁?
