Do you enjoy your job?

What do you do?
Is it enjoyable?
How old are you?
And if you were able to retire tomorrow, would you happily give up your job?

I'm a university lecturer.
Yes, most days.
50
No, not yet. Probably in a few years though.

Tryingtohelp12 · 22/04/2025 09:20

Wfh based role
Nope
34
yes absolutely - predominately because I have 3 young children and feel constantly stretched. I couldn’t give up their things (drs, school, hobbies etc) so in a dream world, work would be the thing that has to go!

SallyWD · 22/04/2025 09:22

Yes, another university employee here but I'm in professional services (non-academic). I mostly do Comms and organise events.
I really enjoy it as it's varied, intellectually stimulating and not too stressful.
I'm 50.
No, I like working for now. Wouldn't want to retire yet.

MsPenguins · 22/04/2025 09:40

Overseas economic development
Love it
Early 50s
Can afford to retire, not sure, but that's mainly as had cancer which is clear now but lifelong risk of returning at stage 4. Which doesn't bother me but would like some more travel. Otherwise might go for part time somewhere with no commute.

MinnieMountain · 22/04/2025 09:45

Legal auditor.
Yes.
46.
I’d maybe retire in 10 years. Seems pointless at the moment as we have an 11yo so can’t travel much anyway.

PurpleChrayn · 22/04/2025 10:06

I’m a writer and editor and I love it.

Janedoe82 · 22/04/2025 10:10

Charity manager in social care field
love it
can’t retire but don’t want to either.
Early forties

Natsku · 22/04/2025 10:11

Aircraft mechanic/soon to be carpenter (working in manufacturing side of things, not maintenance)
Very enjoyable though sometimes very hard work and can be stressful. Helps a lot that it's a very nice workplace.

Would not want to give up work even if I could retire or won the lottery or something like that. Though I'd happily cut down hours.

StrawberryEater · 22/04/2025 10:29

Solicitor specialising in human rights.
Love my job even though it can be difficult and stressful and is not well paid for what it entails (would be on double/triple my salary if I had chosen to go into commercial or corporate law). The job is intellectually stimulating and winning a case for my clients who are some of the most vulnerable people in society is well worth the downsides. I know I am lucky to be able to make that choice and work for less money than I could earn.
Mid 40s.
No - but I’m not sure I will ever retire as I really enjoy what I do. However I would definitely reduce my caseload and do the job as a volunteer instead of taking a salary if I won the lottery.

Acc0untant · 22/04/2025 10:30

I'm an accountant.
Love it.
Early 30s.
No.

BloodyHellBob · 22/04/2025 10:33

I’m part of an administrative support team.
No, I’m not great at being obsequious which, sadly, is expected from some the people I support.
Im 52.
I would absolutely retire tomorrow and would have plenty to fill my days. I dread having to work until I’m 67.

curious79 · 22/04/2025 10:34

Occupational psychologist
Very interesting and challenging in a good way plus lots of work freedom at this point in my career (WFH, high earning, effectively part-time, own boss)
45-55 bracket
I already could from a financial perspective. If I gave up it would because I had found something more interesting - have lots of hobbies and interests

PenelopeJane91 · 22/04/2025 10:35

Solicitor
Yes, I love my job! I moved from one area of law to another and I never thought I’d “love” a job. It’s stressful at times but so rewarding.
Early 30s
No, I couldn’t afford to retire tomorrow but if I won the lottery, I’d go part-time/volunteer and spend some more time travelling.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/04/2025 11:56

Teacher
Love it but can be horrendous / a lot depends on the support of the school.
56.
oh yes, I would happily retire. Perhaps volunteer in a school with reading help

mamaduckbone · 22/04/2025 12:04

I'm a teacher / senior leader in a small village primary school.
Yes, mostly, because I work with a great team of people, a fantastic head and lovely children. It wasn't always the case but I got out, and stress levels have reduced massively.
I'm 49.
Probably wouldn't retire completely but I'd certainly cut my hours as full time is truly exhausting.

okydokethen · 22/04/2025 12:29

Social worker
I enjoy the work but often not the process’ and the system where there are far more managers than workers which makes decisions long winded.
41
I’d happily not work if I had a lot of money but I don’t.

sunshineandshowers40 · 22/04/2025 12:40

WFH for a charity
Mid 40s
Enjoy it some days but beginning to enjoy it less.

Hoppinggreen · 22/04/2025 12:41

Relocation Consultant
Love it
I am 51
Wouldn't retire but if I won The Lottery I wouldn't work

FlowerFairy12 · 22/04/2025 12:42

I hate it. Project Manager, Civil Service, WFH. I’m 43 and if I could retire today then I definitely would. I seem to live my life planning my annual leave and fun date nights to distract from the monotony of work. Not really sure what I want to do tbh but it’s not this.

FranksInvisibleLlama · 22/04/2025 12:44

Paediatric nurse
Yes, most of the time. It’s exhausting, often very stressful, sometimes very sad, but it’s a great job, I work with a brilliant team and we make a difference to people everyday.
Early 40s
No, but I am already very part time. I do enjoy the job, and work is often the only time I speak to any adults in a week so I would be very lonely if I didn’t go.

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 22/04/2025 12:52

Regulatory compliance, late 50s, part time, could probably retire but no intention of doing so for a good while yet, I find the work really interesting, great bunch of colleagues. If anything happened to this job not sure I'd want to start again in the same field elsewhere, they are all advertised as hybrid / wfh which I'd hate and not much chance of finding anything locally, so I'd look for a different type of p/t work if that happened. I have lots of hobbies and interests but not ready to retire yet, I don't know anyone else my age that has yet.

TattiePants · 22/04/2025 12:58

I’m a project manager for a regional children’s charity. I absolutely love my job and despite earning about a third of what I could earn elsewhere, I wouldn’t change it for anything. My background is in finance (Chartered Accountant) and I’ve never had such a rewarding job as my current one. I’m 50 so a while off retiring but if I did, I’d continue volunteering here.

NominatedNameOfTheDay · 22/04/2025 13:10

Project Manager for a tech company
Age 33
I quite like it, I like the feeling of satisfaction when something goes well and I like feeling useful
I used to think I would retire as soon as possible but I think it’s good for me to have something to structure my days around. Part time or working half days would be great.

Justcashnosweets · 22/04/2025 13:13

Mental health nurse.
No, I don't enjoy it at all. Not anymore.
I'm 48 and have been a nurse for 23 years.
I would absolutely retire tomorrow if I could.

Pooolo · 22/04/2025 13:15

What do you do? Video editor
Is it enjoyable? Yes I love it, creative, get to work on new projects frequently so it doesn’t get stale
How old are you? 30
And if you were able to retire tomorrow, would you happily give up your job? Yes, I love it in the context of work, but there’s so much I’d rather do with my time
