Why did we think the Milk Tray man was romantic?

Basically he worshipped from afar (stalked?), then broke into people’s homes dressed all in black to leave them a box of chocs, and this was seen by most people, including younger me, as endearing and romantic.

Was it the world before #MeToo and entirely acceptable, or am I simply mis remembering how creepy he actually was?

What about the Ambassador spoiling you with his Ferrero Rocher? Would you have been tempted to rummage in his Diplomatic pouch?

Even an Ambassador can’t make a pyramid out of Ferrero Rocher without some kind of supporting structure (or glue)

I know because my BIL used to be an Ambassador, and one Easter we took some Ferraro Rocher Easter eggs for his whole family.
His Excellency commandeered all the sweets and spent the entire breakfast time trying to build a pyramid. His butler, already traumatised by my sister’s insistence on having a jar of Marmite on the table at all times, was obviously bewildered.

It's not that deep

a) Back then, Cadbury's chocolate in general was really nice.
b) Back then, giving someone a box of chocolates was seen as a really special thing to do.
c) The concept was that nothing would stop him getting that esteemed present to the lady, because that's how much of a hero he was.

It really wasn't like a stalker at all.

But then I have a real bugbear about people putting 21st century eyes on things from decades ago.

Agree totally

Milk Tray man was basically a stalking burglar, mind as long as he left the chocs and bogged off I wouldn't complain!
as for a man driving all night to get to you well that is love but never happened to me most men cant be arsed going from the pub never mind miles.
on that vein listen to Rod Stewart Oh God I wish I was home tonight. that song touches me deeply

Men never ran up to you in the street to press lavish bouquets on you either, no matter how much Impulse body spray you doused yourself with.

There were some pretty objectionable adverts from that time but I think demonising the Milk Tray man is a bit much (although I'd have preferred Black Magic, they were lovely back then. Perhaps I could have left a note before the next delivery)
