Tell me the good things about working Mon-Weds

I am hopefully reducing to 0.6 and I am able to choose my days off, however if I don’t do 3 consecutive days they might shift me into a slightly different role/team (same pay and conditions, just wouldn’t be my preference).

Of course this leaves three choices…

M-Tu-W
Tu-W-Th
W-Th-F

I would love W-Th-F to avoid the Sunday scaries and it’s advantageous to be off on Mon BH wise, but that is my DM’s working pattern and she has offered to help us on those days. For that reason Tu-W-Th also doesn’t make much sense.

I really wanted to work a Friday (quite a nice day to be in the office) plus from my observations on mat leave it’s super busy everywhere: shopping centres, baby classes, parks. I’d have preferred two midweek days off, but not at the expense of moving teams

Any Mon-Weds workers, please share the positives!

Oh it’s brilliant. I have done all the above and it’s by far the best.
If you work at the end of the week you spend your week waiting to go to work.
You go to work with the rest of the world…. Everyone resets at the weekend and goes to school and work on a Monday. You feel in step, you feel connected. Starting at the end of the week is discombobulating.
You are busier at the start of the week and start to wind down towards the weeknd - you and the kids as they won’t be in childcare (I presume). I read yesterday that’s actually really good for kids MH.
You can all the jobs done /house nice to enjoy as a family at the weekend.
Thursday night is the new Friday night, you can go out with mates and not worry about work on Friday

The only downside is if your office shuts on Bank Hols you have to take your bank hols on the Monday whereas if you don’t then you get more leave to take when you want. I work BH as normal so this doesn’t affect me.

I wouldn’t worry about the Sunday scaries, after four days off it’s nice to go back to work. I got far more the Tuesday scaries as I couldn’t relax into the week. Now I go in and do my job and then relax into the rest of the week and weekend. (Also have a cleaner who comes on my last day at work so that’s delightful)

I work Mon-wed and it works really well for me.
I feel like most people are going to work on a Monday and getting ready for a new week. I also feel ready to go again as I've just been off for 4 days.
A lot of the time information is passed on at the beginning of the week or anything new is discussed and I'm usually there to be part of it.
It's nice to be involved in the weekend chats with colleagues and what everyone got up to. Usually old news by a Wednesday. People can be starting to have the midweek slump when you would just be starting your week.
My week goes really quickly and before I know it, it's Wednesday and my time off is here.
The biggest bonus for is I like being able to organise the house/ shopping and other errands before DC stop school for weekend. I feel organised when the weekend comes and can enjoy it with family.

I worked W-T-F for a while and still got the Sunday scaries, just on a Tuesday!

CarpetKnees · 21/04/2025 21:05

I didn't mind when I worked in a school, as the annual leave is different, but I would really resent having to 'give' 2/5 of a day's hours of AL back between 4 and 6 times a year when working in a more usual contract.

Very good point

I love the re-set of the week. A Monday off is for me as if I am always falling behind, basically running after myself as everyone else is a day ahead.

I never really understood the Sunday issue, children (and partner) have to start the week anyway so there is alway stuff to do so I better just join in.

SummerDaytoNight · 21/04/2025 21:21

Mon-Wed is great.

Sunday blues when everyone else has it (so you don’t get dragged down by it twice - when others have it, plus on Tuesday).

Thursday and Friday to reset before the weekend (mini weekend before the real weekend).

Colleagues are fresher and not tired and desperate for the weekend to arrive.

Plus you get bank holidays.

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 21/04/2025 21:24

I've done lots of combinations and think it's by far the best too, the bank holidays thing doesn't bother me in the slightest (we are flexible so I don't normally need a/l for eg appointments as I make the time up later in the week). You start the same as everyone else in the family and the workplace on Monday, I've never really bought into the Sunday scaries thing. Means you aren't strolling in midweek and playing catch up on what has been happening - I keep an eye on my email on Thur/Fri so no big surprises but only need to respond about twice a year. You also get the catch up from the weekend chat. Time off at the end of the week to get all the jobs done before the weekend and meet friends, most of mine don't work Fridays either. Our office is very quiet on Fridays and I much prefer it when everyone's in. There is literally nothing to dislike for me.

SummerDaytoNight · 21/04/2025 21:28

Yes, starting the week with everyone instead of playing catch up is a good thing.

Countrydiary · 21/04/2025 21:47

I work Tuesday-Thursday and I think there are massive advantages in starting work on a Monday. By Tuesday everyone else is up to speed for the week and is making decisions about things I haven’t even had a chance to read about in emails yet.

The only thing is looking at the T&Cs of the impact of Bank Holidays, at ours we get BH hours pro rata’d in lieu so I get slightly more holiday and I’m always off on a Monday anyway.
