If two autistic parents have a child

Will that mean the child will have more difficulties and be more severely autistic? I know it’s a spectrum but I mean have more difficulties in all areas/less likely to be high functioning/more likely to have co-morbidities?

This is something I've wondered.

Does the severity of autism potentially increase through the generations?

DustyMaiden · 21/04/2025 11:47

Mathematically no idea. I know autistic couples with NT D.C.

Can’t predict really. The genetic component isn’t that well known, it’s not like a typical hereditary condition when you can attribute it to a particular parents genes, as far as I’m aware.

My best friend and her dh are autistic they have 8 children , all autistic some ASD and adhd. The eldest and the youngest are the most severely affected.

We have a seemingly random NT child thrown into the mix. Which is bizarre as the entire family on both sides is either formally diagnosed or strongly suspected ND. Perhaps we'll just find out they're just incredible at masking or they just aren't as 'quirky' as the rest of us so we assume they are NT.

Amethystanddiamonds · 21/04/2025 12:02

Also no 'severity' hasn't increased. We all have the same kind of profile unless there is another condition thrown in. My DD for example is pretty much a mini me.

Branleuse · 21/04/2025 12:08

No it doesn't, but they're likely to have an autistic kid. It doesn't mean they'll have higher support needs than the parents though.
It doesn't mean they wont either I guess.

No, it’s more complicated than that. My friend is autistic, married to an autistic man and they have 3 NT children and one who is autistic.

I’m autistic, my partner is NT, we have two NT children and one autistic child.
