Is it Easter or Christmas at this point?

I assumed Easter was just for chocolate. Apparently social media thinks otherwise! Glad my kids don’t have phones yet because I definitely don’t want them seeing massive “Easter hauls.” Anyone else noticed this?

It is obvious what you should be doing then. I am not concerned with what others are doing, I am not on SM looking at them, and their Easter hauls.

I’m not at all envious and never or my children. It’s not the expense for us but added ‘stuff’. I don’t pass any negative judgement or think anything less of anyone’s parenting if the choose to do it. My only statement was that we simply don’t.

GRCP · 21/04/2025 10:43

@IceIceBabyBumplove it!!

Easter isn't 'for chocolate'. It's a Christian festival. There can be chocolate eggs and hot cross buns - or not, depending on whether you want them.

You said you felt rotten after looking on social media so it bothers you. Don’t let it or stop looking are the obvious answers.

I read your post wrong then. I thought that you were saying that it made you feel rotten seeing what others had got for their children. I beg your pardon.

Different cultures, different customs? People come from different countries who do Easter differently.

I am from Germany and we never got big eggs, we always got baskets with small ones, bunnies and other chocolate items.

Cousins got gifts, we didn't. DD gets a gift as we got so much chocolate from others but we still wanted her to say "Easter Bunny was here", that's how we tick.

Even worse, I have a couple of bunny figurines out, a bunch of twigs with eggs on and a small stuffed bunny.

A very long time ago, when I was a child, there were some eggs which were white and sugary and I don't think they were chocolate at all. My aunt gave me one, once - thoroughly spoiled child.

As an ancient person, it's still nice to eat a chocolate egg on Easter Day, but it's very ok if it's a tiny one.

Why would you want your children to have an orgy of sugar consumption. Revolting.
DS doesn't have a single filling at 43 years old.
He got one easter egg of his choice every year and that's it. He wasn't deprived.

I grew up in the 90s eating and drinking shit loads of sugar and I have no fillings.

Are these threads going to be an annual thing now? We can add them into the rotation along with Christmas Eve box outrage, Halloween is too American and all the other ‘people do things differently to me so they must be stupid and wrong’ ones.

Not aimed at the OP so much as some of the comments. I am guilty of a TikTok doom scroll of an evening but have to say I’ve seen far more videos of people moaning about other people turning Easter into Christmas, and giving their kids too much than I have any videos/ posts of people actually overdoing it or doing much more than chocolate and maybe a token gift.

Same on here - so many posts about how terrible and OTT it all is, but I’ve not seen anyone actually posting that they’ve bought their kids a new PlayStation and designer trainers for Easter.

We’ve definitely gone OTT by the ‘one egg and nothing else’ posters’ standards. Just chocolate this year but hasn’t always been. Decorations up as well - none of it has gone on social media and it’s not affecting anyone else, nor do I care what others choose to do. There’s always going to be people being ridiculous on social media, particularly those whose income depends on it, but if you’re genuinely happy with how you do things and believe it to be the right way then why even give it a second thought?

Purpleisnotmycolour · 21/04/2025 11:45

Mine get some chocolate ( they long since asked for actual chocolate instead of eggs as better value!) and a relevant Christian book. When they were little they maybe got an outfit.

OklahomaSkies · 21/04/2025 11:50

We buy our children and other family and friends gifts at Easter. We all get together 3 times a year, Xmas, Easter and the first week in August. All 3 times are like Xmas with loads of gifts, food and spending time together.

@SouthLondonMum22 Wow you’re brave, and I hope you’re rich, because you’re setting yourself up for a bit of a nightmare there. Your kids are presumably young enough to accept books, puzzles and stickers. But when they’re older they’ll want much much more, and having established Easter as a time of gift giving, you’ll need some serious cash. Good luck!!

Of course they won't want easter puzzles as they grow but then the same goes for Christmas too. Their wants will naturally change as they get older and that's absolutely fine.

Espresso25 · 21/04/2025 14:22

My algorithm must be off because I’ve not seen anything of the sort.

My kids (3 and 6) have had about 4 eggs each from family. We didn’t buy any this year as last year they had so many. They haven’t complained. We had a nice family roast yesterday and have celebrated without any hysteria.

Why do you assume older children will want more (expensive?) things.
I bought my almost 17 year old a packet of Pokémon cards and a pin badge (£3.50 and 50p).
She's happy.

Vatsallfolks · 21/04/2025 14:39

I bloody love Easter for the simple reason that it’s family gathering .. a £5 egg for kids and that’s it .. the rest is just about being f together without the stress xxx
