Female-presented science TV for kids

I need your help, hive mind!

My kids (DD5 & DS7) are interested in space and enjoyed watching Solar System (presented by Professor Brian Cox) on BBC iPlayer. They asked to watch it again today, so rather than watch whole series again, I put on an episode of Cosmos (presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson) from a few years ago.

When it finished, DD asked me "can only boys do science?". I guess my "you can be anything you want to be” chats have not been sinking in 🙄

So, can anyone recommend any child-friendly STEM TV presented by a woman?

Hannah Fry's The Secret Genius of Modern Life series is very good. There's also The Sky at Night which is presented by Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock.

It’s more aimed at kids than the ones you mentioned but my daughter likes Emily’s Wonder Lab on Netflix - she’s nearly 5 but I think it would be ok for a 7 year old too.

She also likes the Ada Twist Scientist series.

Some links to clips/ ideas here too - www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/do-you-know-top-5-special-camera-moments

Look up Maddie Moate on YouTube. Her science channel specialises in Science communication for children. She also did a mini-series on beekeeping (I enjoyed that one more than DD!)
Also Hannah Fry's "The secret genius of modern life" on BBC iPlayer - each episode she explains the science/ technology behind various inventions.

Look up your local uni and see what they have going on.

So many recommendations to look into, thanks!

I'd forgotten about the Christmas lectures, I loved those as a kid!

Lara at Theatre of Science is brilliant 😍. My 12 year old daughter loves her videos, but she has lots of videos aimed at younger children too.

Maddie Moate is great. She has a series on CBeebies called Do You Know and a few spin offs, I guess CBeebies might be a bit babyish for 5 and 7 but I think it would still fit the bill. My DD has loved her since she was 2 and has learnt so much.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/04/2025 22:58

Maddie Moates 'Do you know' and cbeebies had a show called Bitz and Bob

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock

We also like Liz Bonnin, though I'm not sure if the programmes she presents might be a bit old for you children.
