Do you think social media (such as Insta/FB) will fizzle out?

I mean social media platforms where people share their real lives (with photos/posts).

I know the younger generation have pretty much shunned fb and I was chatting to my 18 year old dd who said its less likely they will post loads of pictures of their social lives or make "status" updates.

I rarely post on fb/Instagram nowadays and have found after day trips/nights out I could no longer imagine needing to post about it on social media.

So it's got me thinking, I wonder if social media platforms where people share their real lives (as in not like mn where it's anonymous) will eventually fizzle out?

I really hope so.
It's become so unhealthy for kids mental health.
Constant comparisons to everyone else.

The younger generation have indeed moved away from FB but they are on TikTok/Snapchat. So no I don’t think it will fizzle out, the platforms they use will just change

Pinkelephant66 · 20/04/2025 19:56

I hope so but sadly Tik tok is much worse imo and that seems to be the craze … hopefully that will die out too at some point

Queenest · 20/04/2025 19:57

There’ll be something else I’m sure. Younger federations will want something new of their own. It’s always the way.

Wintershealing · 20/04/2025 19:58

It is bad for their mental health I agree.

I find it really strange when people don't have their settings on fb private to friends only where they share their lives, complete with their kids on there!

Platforms will change as trends shift. But I don't understand this constant need to follow/like/be liked/share/get upset because your bf or husband didnt post something about something that no one but you cares about.

I agree it's odd. Or needing 1000 "friends".

Fb and Instagram do seem very outdated now, especially now you can have WhatsApp groups to update and share pictures to distant family members.

Yep. My main feed is mainly ads and people trying to make money now, especially Insta
FB is a thing of the past in my friend group

FB & X are poisonous now, I think they'll eat themselves eventually. As for the others, I think they probably will just fade out, same as MySpace did. People will move on to the next thing.

SerendipityJane · 14/05/2025 14:20

"This 'printing' thing. Do you think it'll fade out ?" 😀

Everything evolves. Including evolution.

Currently the dismal signal-to-noise ratio across all channels (including mainstream platforms) is rapidly reducing their utility (and thence value) to the products consumers. I think Gartner have calculated that everytime a major corporation uses the initials "AI" in their communications, the overall market capitalisation shrinks by a few hundredths of a percent.

TatteredAndTorn · 14/05/2025 17:11

I fucking hope so.

mindutopia · 14/05/2025 18:04

I don’t think so. It will change. Social media has been going since like the dawn of the internet. It’s not like a new thing with young people today. I remember sharing all sorts of stuff about what I was up to in my AOL away message back in the day. That must have been 2000 ish? And blogging too. Back in the dark ages.

And not everyone shares everything about their lives on social media. I’m a pretty normal 40 something and I have friends my age and younger who have no social media presence. Have never had Facebook, Instagram, etc. Actually, amongst people I know, the most active ones on social media are over 60s! It will morph and change, but people have been sharing stories of their lives publicly for a long time across the generations.

They are more than made up for by those that do ...

Instagram/tiktok will become when the old people use
They will get a new platform which is just the same but they will insist its different.
