Wasp building nest in wheelie bin

Evermore7 · 20/04/2025 11:14

Last night I went to our bin and there was a wasp building a nest that was about the size of half a golf ball. I hit the nest with a bottle and it fell into the bin and the wasp flew away.

However today the wasp is back in the bin. When you open the lid it flies out but then it crawls back in though the back where there is a small gap.

What can I do to get rid of this wasp?

Stick tape on the gap in the bin?

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 20/04/2025 11:21

Just keep destroying the nest, it will go elsewhere.

RichWithNoSelfControl · 20/04/2025 11:22

Apparently they hate peppermint or citronella scents, buy a bottle of essential oil and just dump the whole bottle in the bin, it should get them to rethink their location. Plus there's the added bonus that your bin will smell nice

SwanOfThoseThings · 20/04/2025 11:23

How do you know it is the same wasp?

RealityContinuesToRuinMyLife · 20/04/2025 11:25

We had a persistent wasp trying to build in our shed. A spray of the entrance area with some Raid fly and wasp killer meant it never came back.

Evermore7 · 20/04/2025 11:25

Thanks for the suggestions. We have stuck some cardboard over the gap to see if that works and have removed all parts of the nest now as last night I just hit off the main part. I will look for the essential oils as that’s a good idea thanks.

I just presumed it was the same wasp as i have never had a wasp in my wheelie bin before so didn’t think it was likely for another to come in

Did you spray the wasp or just around where it was building?

Get the Raid wasp spray and go wild in and around the bin.

Wasps chew cardboard and wood products to make their nests, it like you’re inviting it to try again.

Evermore7 · 20/04/2025 11:36

Oh no, that wasn’t the brightest idea then. Thanks we will remove it and get some spray.

Both.

Tinyrabbit · 20/04/2025 12:04

There's an excellent powder which is specifically for wasp nests, several companies make their own version of it, eg Rentokil.
I've used it on a large nest and it worked perfectly, though it can take a bit of time depending on the number of wasps/size of nest.
Safer and more effective than insect spray.

SnowdaySewday · 20/04/2025 12:32

Use Raid fly and wasp spray in the bin.

Added bonus, as it also kills flies, you won’t get maggots in your bin either.

Don't feel obliged to post a photo , one thing in life that properly gives me the creeps is a wasp nest !

hcee19 · 20/04/2025 12:46

Expanding foam, they will all be dead within 2 days. After that you with have to cut away all the foam , but it does work, l have done it myself. Somehow we got a wasps nest in the garage, had no idea what to do, until my elderly neighbour suggested the foam, so though we would give it a go, glad we tried. Had no problems since and that was atleast 6 years ago. Hope this may help you

I had a wasp nest up my windchime. (No comments please on my lovely windchime that only sings when the wind is howling).

I got up early before the wasps and sent some fly spray up and down. They just fell out dead like rain.

SwanOfThoseThings · 20/04/2025 13:16

It's worth noting that if your wasps' nest is in a place where it's doing no harm, you can just leave it and the wasps will desert it in autumn and not come back, as they don't re-use nests or build new nests where there's an old one. Obviously that doesn't apply if the wasps are causing damage to your property or the nest is sited in a high people traffic area where stinging is a risk.

Evermore7 · 20/04/2025 14:32

The nest is on the inside of the lid to my wheelie bin for our general waste so we need to be able to use the bin, so no option but to get rid of it.
