How to do Easter chocolate?

Innittowinnit · 19/04/2025 20:38

I‘ve suggested leaving a few mini eggs outside the kid‘s rooms to placate them, and we‘ll do the bigger easter egg hunt after lunch.

DH thinks this isn’t right, they should learn how to wait. Kids are 8 and 5.

I don’t think every single thing need to be a lesson, and they can eat chocolate before breakfast once a year.

What do you do in your house?

Definitely an after lunch thing for us. DH has some small ones to hind in the garden while we are out at church and they'll be allowed some of the ones they've already been given by family and have been put on a high shelf later in the afternoon and will be rationed over the next couple of months probsbly based on how much they have.

We don't do any secrecy or magic appearance of eggs.

purpleme12 · 19/04/2025 20:43

Easter egg is waiting on settee when she wakes up

Easter egg Hunt with mini hollow chocolate eggs have been done in night so that's also a first thing job as well

I'm sure she'll end up eating some chocolate at breakfast time!

Ofcoursehesthefkingfarmer · 19/04/2025 20:44

We do the hunt later on in the day when family have arrived and had a drink. There is an egg and some Easter treats waiting for them when they wake up though.

When The DC were small (maybe 8+) they used to get cocoa pops for breakfast isn't half an easter egg as a bowl.
Never did an Easter egg hunt, I don't know why, but I don't remember doing them as a child either.

LuluDelulu · 19/04/2025 20:47

I always had Easter eggs as soon as we woke up! Like gifts at Christmas. The hunt was smaller eggs just for fun.

LittleLabrador · 19/04/2025 20:49

When mine were younger the egg hunt was at my sisters and was after lunch. They were allowed an egg after their cereal though.

now they’re older (9 and 12) and still insist on an egg hunt! Will do it first thing due to the dog and so I can set it up when they’re asleep. It’s only a little token hunt but I think it’s nice they still want to do it and it’s been a nice tradition for them.

Elpheba · 19/04/2025 20:57

We do an indoor treasure hunt first thing to find a chocolate bunny or similar sized thing- they can eat that immediately if they want. Christmas Day and Easter Sunday are the two days a year you’re allowed chocolate for breakfast (if you’re a child- it has been known on several other days for me 😂)
Then we’ll have a wider family egg hunt later in the afternoon.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/04/2025 20:59

Easter (like Christmas) means chocolate before breakfast. The eggs are on the dining table first thing and we do an easter egg hunt once everyone is dressed. We're not religious though so Easter is the chocolate festival.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 19/04/2025 21:00

We used to just do the egg hunt first thing then chocolate for breakfast. Now at 8 and 10 they will still want the egg hunt after lunch but aren’t fussed about chocolate for breakfast. Embrace the chocolate! Kids aren’t little for long

Eldermillennialmum · 19/04/2025 21:02

We give eggs and do an Easter egg hunt first thing in the morning and let them eat the chocolate - it's Easter!

LuluDelulu · 19/04/2025 21:02

It does seem a bit controlling and Victorian not to have any chocolate for breakfast on Easter Sunday

It's never occurred to me to give out the eggs for breakfast. Not Victorian, just something else I'd never heard of anyone doing until this thread.

Well your approach certainly seems controlling if you ration the eggs out over months!

JustAMum31 · 19/04/2025 21:05

Small easter egg, a few new books and card are on the couch for when DS wakes up - he knows these are from DH and I.

Easter bunny has been and hidden some plastic eggs and some little hollow chocolate eggs round the house for a little egg hunt.

I work every Sunday and DH is also away with work so I’ll do the hunt with DS first thing before my sister arrives to look after him for me while I work.
He’s not a huge chocolate fan at all so he’ll probably just feed her the chocolate while they read his new books 😂

Yotoyoto · 19/04/2025 21:06

Does everyone do an Easter egg hunt? This is our first Easter we’re DC are old enough really and I’m not sure what to do.

they’ve already had 4 Easter egg hunts !! (One at school, one at childminders in school holiday, one at grand parents and one in the village) so was just going to put the eggs on the table.

I never had egg hunts as a child

To a degree. Everyone rations snacks and treats don't they? They've already been given 3 full size eggs each with probably another coming tomorrow from family. Will get about 10 creme egg size ones each over 2 hunts today and on Wednesday plus a couple more at church. Then they got about 25 small bits and sweets each at another trail thing today.

So yeah, will probably last months. Certainly weeks.

StampOnTheGround · 19/04/2025 21:08

Chocolate before breakfast here too! It’s 1 day to break the ‘rules’ and enjoy.

I don’t remember doing Easter egg hunts at home when I was younger, we are doing one for DC though.

@Yotoyotobe careful what you start!!

mynameiscalypso · 19/04/2025 21:10

I’ve set up a little hunt for DS(5) for him to do first thing with simple clues, leading to his Easter egg plus a puzzle he’ll be even more excited about. DH will take him to church for a service around 11/12 so there’s plenty of time in the morning for chocolate and we don’t have any plans for the day so we’re not waiting for anyone to join us. No doubt DS will then spend the afternoon writing clues and setting up hunts for me and DH.

If they were preschoolers I suppose I would ration it but if they were primary school age I’d let them self moderate (or gorge themselves silly) just like I would let them eat whatever chocolate they want at Christmas. Once or twice a year doesn’t hurt. The amount of chocolate you describe certainly wouldn’t last most people months!

MsGoodenough · 19/04/2025 21:12

We have an Easter table that's been set up and decorated for days. We do a hunt for smaller eggs. For me the best thing about Easter as a child was rolling decorated hard boiled eggs down a hill! We never had hunts then.

Vodkamartini3olives · 19/04/2025 21:19

Easter egg each and a small collection of candy for each in a pile on the dinner table. They can eat whenever they like. Easter & Christmas= chocolate for breakfast

@Yotoyoto Neither did I but I desperately wanted one!
DS is only 4 but we’ve done then since he started walking. I’m not talking clues etc…I just hide little plastic eggs and a few small hollow chocolate ones round the garden and he goes and finds them. Although it’s set up inside this year as the weather is hideous!

My children (5+7) will get at least 7 large boxed eggs each, with the extras along with some Lindt bunnies and all the Easter egg hunt booty thanks to friends and family.
They are unlikely to self regulate to anywhere near a sensible level so I will also be advocating for them and rationing a sensible amount over the next few weeks.
I’ve never thought myself Victorian in not allowing my children 100s of grams of chocolate in one sitting, but rather a responsible parent. They can have Easter eggs for breakfast but for what I assumed were quite logical reasons, I will not allow them to eat chocolate until they become unwell.
