Has anyone used a smoke bomb for wasps in tgeir attic? My dad 92 years old had a massive nest last year and is concerned they will be back 😱 he wants to get some smoke bombs but is concerned that they will smoke out the whole house? Is this likely I tried looking on reviews and google and its really unclear.
Any advice will be welcome

Get a professional in. Don’t risk tackling anything yourself .

Who is going up there to put the smoke bombs in and remove the wasps, no thanks, get a professional in who can also look at the access points.

I am not a wasp expert and wasp nest give the the creeps but I was told they don't go back to an old site?

Don't know if that would be the old nest or the entire loft though ?

Berryslacks · 18/04/2025 14:56

I believe wasps don’t return to a previously used nest/location? I doubt your Dad will be troubled by them again this year. This has certainly been the case whenever we have had wasps nests. I don’t think the smoke bomb is a good idea.

Lovelysummerdays · 18/04/2025 14:57

I was told wasps don’t return to the same nest so it’s better to leave as will put off other wasps. I do annually smoke bomb the attic as I’ve had issues with cluster flies. I personally wouldn’t stay in the house when they are working. Although the rest of the house isn’t Smokey there is a smell so smokebomb go out for six hours, air the house, fine after a bit. If you have any pet fish, remove the tank until finished airing.

@Lovelysummerdays yes I agree that’s why you can buy artificial wasps nests to deter wasps. Monty Don has one in his grapevine greenhouse I think.

If your dad receives benefits, it's possible his local council would treat a wasps nest for him for free if he gets one. But as PPs have said, there's no need to do anything until/unless he does.

We have used smoke bombs once in the loft and they did not smoke out the house. We did however let the local fire station know we were doing it in case someone reported smoke coming from the house. We never had wasps up there again.

We have an old wasps nest in our loft that pre-dates us viewing our house in 2022 because they won’t return if there’s an existing nest nearby.

We had a man out to deal with a new nest in our garden last year and he said they avoid existing nests because, after dying out over the winter, the next generation have no memory of the last nest so can’t tell if the nest is one of their historic ones or another group of wasps who could do them harm.

Notsuchafattynow · 18/04/2025 18:14

When we moved into our house, we removed over 6 wasp nests, so I don't believe in 'leave it' theory.

Get a man round. We were charged £60 to remove them all.

RentalWoesNotFun · 18/04/2025 18:18

£40 here. I had a few stragglers return to their old stomping ground for two years after I got the professional in. But none hung about.

Arghgerroffyabastard · 18/04/2025 18:25

To go completely the other way, we have nests in our garden or roof most years; they don’t bother us and we don’t bother them. Wasps have to live somewhere, and they’re a crucial part of the ecosystem.

I know they give people the willies, but if they’re somewhere where you can live and let live (and a loft you don’t need access to is often such a place), then please consider it.

The only years we removed a nest was once when we were having a loft done and the builders wouldn’t go near, and once when they set up home next to the patio and I got stung a couple of times.

I would happily leave them and did last year as dad was in hospital for 2 months but they were everywhere in the house as well as the attic. I just hope they dont come back this year and I dont have to do anything 😂
