Argh! Ear wax and flying Saturday!

Hi - quick panic question!
My son is due to fly abroad Saturday lunchtime and has just told me his ear is completely blocked with wax! We leave for the airport with overnight stay tomorrow. It’s all a bit tricky as he’s autistic and so he has sensory difficulties and is worried his eardrum will burst.

There are zero appointments for tomorrow anywhere near us and he’s previously had it micro-suctioned which helped.

Any ideas? It’s a very long 13 hour flight and he’s worried he’ll get a burst eardrum.
Putting oil in it last time did nothing.

Any ideas?

I use the syringe similar to the one linked upthread. Special tip. Just fill with warm water and rinse out the ear.
I use it on autistic DC who doesn’t tolerate syringing and it works very well.

Doesn’t tolerate syringing at the doctor’s I mean. Or microsuction. As a result he once had to have wax removed under general anaesthetic as it had got so bad. Understandably that’s not something you can do too often, so I was very grateful to find this method which worked.

A good thing to take when flying, is buy sudafed tablets, take 1 an hour before take off (or a few hours before) and it clears your tubes, so that when you come to land your ears arent blocked, it works a treat.

Ear wax won't cause a burst ear drum. As others have said it's pressure building up behind the drum that causes the problem.

Sudafed/decongestants work by trying to open the eustachian tubes, relieving the pressure. These get narrowed when you have a cold due to inflammation.

Clear his wax by all means, but don't worry about burst eardrums

Please don't do the peroxide thing, someone on here recommended it to another poster a few years ago for her DP and she came back and said he was in agony and it was the only time she had ever seen him in tears after doing it

Yes I also read about that.

He’s at the airport hotel now and his ear was pretty much ok this morning before they left, so hopefully he’ll be ok.

Thanks everyone - some very useful info on this thread.😊

I’m not sure - from intense pressure on the drum? The last time he had it micro suctioned, she said there was a lot of wax sitting on the drum.

The wax is in the outer ear, there is no wax in the middle/inner ear. The drum sits between them. If anything burst is because there is pressure in the middle ear, and that's what burst. Nothing that is in the outer ear is a problem for flying
