Is this cruel or should celebs be an allowable target of humour looking at the likes of sporting image?

There has been a fair amount in the press about this but I wonder if the humour is any different to that of sporting image where the physical features of celebrities were parodied in puppet form. At least in my lifetime there have been plenty of comedians who have used mockery of high profile figures as part of their act so is this a step to far or are celebs now given a greater shield from offence?

White Lotus star is ripped by SNL insiders over teeth joke complaint

It was the 'mean' sketch that sparked a furious transatlantic row over teeth, with British stars leading the charge against the cruel mocking of actress Aimee Lou Wood on Saturday Night Live.

Impersonation as comedy is accepted (dead ringers R4 for example) so it depends where you draw the line between impersonation and cruel mockery. I see personally one impersonation being acceptable as it is a slightly worrying prospect that FV shows have to apologise for every offence caused to the rich and famous.

I'm just imagining Anthony Hopkins getting upset at Dawn French's portrayal of his Hannibal Lecter.

Is she not allowed to voice her opinion on it though? I don't believe she is calling for an apology or for SNL to be whipped off air- but why can't she voice her opinion? She even said herself she wasn't fussed on the portrayal of her teeth, its the comment in the skit about fluoride which suggests people who have teeth like this are dirty and unhygenic when it's not the case. Lots of girls and women have said she has helped their confidence, it's good for people to see her standing up for herself I'd have thought.

Storm in a teacup whipped up by the DM. She said she didn’t mind people taking the piss but didn’t like that in the sketch the part about her was the only time they punched down. The person who performed the skit apologised. Everybody happy.

Not content with this civilised resolution the DM step in and does what the DM does.

I agree with her, its cheap and unfunny to go for someone’s looks.

Yes No Selects would be banned now or never made. I am just suggesting times change.

No chicken selects?!
I think you need to turn off your autocorrect! It's making your posts senseless!

I think it is a little cruel but where do you draw the line with humour about anyone?

I think if this was the 70s this wouldn't be a story really.

“It was ok in the 70s” (aka 50 years ago) is a pretty low bar. Let’s just bring back marital rape as a legally acceptable pastime shall we?

I hadn’t heard of her or the show but at her age in her industry I would say that she has chosen to have her teeth the way they are (and good for her) it’s not the same as mocking some other physical characteristics.

I don’t really understand this comment. How is this different to someone who’s obese not choosing to take ozempic / have a gastric band, or someone with a large nose not having a rhinoplasty. Why is the shape of her jaw / teeth more of a “choice” than other characteristics?

She knows her looks are quite unique. One of the first lines spoken to her in TWL is “I love your teeth”! SNL chose a shitty angle, though, making it about hygiene. Good for her for calling them out and for them for apologising.

ALW rightly talked about “punching down”. That’s the issue. Impersonators on shows like Dead Ringers know where the lines are, they “punch up”. Bo Selecta absolutely did not and thank the lord we now see that and a show like that today would be laughed out of the commissioning room.

I think she is fab - a model of normality when she could have got dental work and a boob job and turned herself into another clone perpetuating beauty standards that damage the self image of girls and women and who are targeted by an industry that routinely suggests women hurt, break and reform themselves to be more acceptable.

The joke wasn’t about the role, an impersonation of her character portrayal that exaggerates key elements it was just that she had bad teeth because of poor dental care/hygiene. It was about her, not her character and it’s unpleasant and misogynistic- not edgy or funny. I respect her for not changing her very lovely self and am not surprised she is being bullied for it - every girl and woman who stands out knows why that happens.

Sandylittleknees · 16/04/2025 09:04

Zigazig - most actors have orthodontic work done, surely you didn’t think all the ‘Hollywood smiles’ were natural. I would argue that deciding not to take steps to have a healthy weight is also a choice, especially in that industry. I was thinking more about skin colour, sex, height which are not something people can have any control over.

Anyone seen the recent SNL that apparently crucifies disabled people (with Tourettes)? I've read about it but as a disabled person I'm too scared to watch it.

ZOMBIE THREAD!!!

(Probably not an awful idea to bring it back up though.)

Since we're talking about teeth... Anyone else remember the Spitting Image Janet Street Porter?

Caricatures in cartoon form have been around for a very long time, and are still in some newspapers in the UK every day.

Be a I agree the 70s wasnt the best decade for humour and I am certainly not suggesting going back there.

However I don't know where the line should be in terms of high-profile characters being shielded from parody especially if they gain a great deal of money from thaybprofile. Can't you argue to some extent that if you are famous there will always be some mockery of comment and it is part for the course?

Also is complaining just drawing more attention to the spat? King Charles has had many comments about his ears in the past of absolute silence on this from him just seems like a good PR strategy.

As distinct from what — addressing it in the Christmas Day speech?

likelysuspect · 01/03/2026 23:37

People have strange rules about who can be spoken about or mocked

You can mock white male politicians for example. And moreso if they're right wing and that extends to their children and wives too.

You cant mock female politicians and even less so if they're left wing

You can sort of mock male sports stars, people will tolerate that.

You cant mock female actors or sports starts, people wont tolerate that.

Not just spitting image, decades before that, jokes and caricatures about people like Mick Jagg er, Bowie etc

Decades before that too - caricatures have been around for centuries.
