What do you do with the books you/DC no longer read

YouAndMeAnd · 15/04/2025 20:50

Just that really. We’ve always given them away to charity but DC want to save up some money to buy more books. I don’t like the idea of wrapping and sending on eBay.
Any ideas?

I give them away.
I’m in London and everyone in our area puts the stuff they’re clearing out in a box out the front and passers by can browse the books/old toys etc and help themselves.

justkeepswimingswiming · 15/04/2025 20:52

World of books buy them. Only like 10 pence unless it’s something rarer then can be a few £ for a book.
I usually just donate ours though, and we’re big readers.

TheDandyLion · 15/04/2025 20:52

Sell to World of Books. Its only pence or a few pounds per book but its better than nothing. You can drop them off in a box at the InPost locker and don't need to print a label.

Or donate to a book crossing swap shop shelf somewhere.

One of those book selling sites. Music magpie used to take them. You need an app and something to put the books in. I've made a bit of money back from lots of books. Pennies on some but others more

Cecilly · 15/04/2025 21:13

I keep the special ones. I love children’s books

1apenny2apenny · 15/04/2025 21:15

I’ve kept a lot of mine, just put them in the loft. Books are so expensive. If my children don’t have children I’ll charity shop them.

Growlybear83 · 15/04/2025 21:31

I keep almost all my books. My mum kept most of my toys from when i was a child but I’ve always wished she had kept my books as well.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/04/2025 21:44

I thought that is what attics are for 🤔

Ponderingwindow · 15/04/2025 21:47

Our primary school did a huge used book drive for our sister school. Classes would compete to see who donated the most books. Students at the recipient school got to shop for books at a free book fair.

Fgfgfg · 15/04/2025 21:49

Buy another bookcase.

Moier · 15/04/2025 21:56

Sell on vinted..use the money to buy more from vinted.

Echobelly · 15/04/2025 21:59

We keep some that have strong memories attached or are classics that future generations might enjoy. The rest we give away, either to charity shops or sometimes I leave a box outside our house.

My MIL is a total hoarder of childhood stuff, DH is a little less so, and I'm very unsentimental but I'm generally a good judge of what to keep. DH will say he wants to check my 'throw out' pile but months and months elapse and he's forgotten so I take the initiative! If it's a book that's come from his childhood, it's always a keeper or if it's something we read a lot when the kids were little. Otherwise he won't even remember it exists so I clear out.

TheChosenTwo · 15/04/2025 21:59

Donate them to the local school or put in boxes out the front of the house. I do this with all toys/games that are no longer wanted and it all goes.
Second hand books don’t really sell for much money unless they are especially ‘special’ editions.

Lovelysummerdays · 15/04/2025 22:04

I pass them along. The local supermarket has a free to take/ change in a bucket, book shelf. I think you’d be hard pressed to make much for kids books . I’d be tempted to help him make money another way. Clean his old bike and sell it on gumtree. Old clothes on vinted.

workstealssleep · 15/04/2025 22:10

I'm keeping my favourites for the grandchildren. I pass some nice ones on to little cousins. I give tonnes away to charity shops.

EmmaEmEmz · 15/04/2025 22:28

Sell on vinted.

PandaG · 15/04/2025 22:34

Sell some on a local Facebook selling group, others go in a box at the end of the drive for people to help themselves to, but I do stick a jar out for donations for a local charity.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 15/04/2025 22:34

I gave my DD's old books to our doctors surgery as the books there made a huge difference when we were waiting for appointments.

TheAmusedQuail · 15/04/2025 22:36

No point keeping a book that's never going to be reread.

Some second hand bookshops will buy them, or at the very least, give you a credit balance with them. Some books, rare or old copies, may have some value, but ultimately, most books aren't worth much. So I charity shop them or offer them free on social media.

Dogaredabomb · 15/04/2025 22:38

Put them in the recycling bin

Thecatspjymas · 15/04/2025 22:38

We donate to DDs school

CarpetKnees · 15/04/2025 23:05

Children's books I used to take into school.

Generally, most of my books are either library or charity shop buys, so, once read, I return them to the right one.

Atlas314 · 05/08/2025 07:30

I recently discovered this app, TravellingBooks, that allows you to share books around the world with other users, very easy to use. Can be found on the App Store or on the Play Store.. and is free! :)

chiefscoutsgoldaward · 05/08/2025 07:55

There Is one of those book swap boxes on the next road, so I put ours in there now.

If we are having a clear out of kids books, I’ll put them in a box on the front wall. We live next to a primary school and they all went in an instant last time so I wonder whether someone took them into the school.

reluctantbrit · 05/08/2025 07:56

World of Books and Music Magpie are not bad but I had stacks of books they wouldn't accept so it's very much a hit and miss. The more popular a book is , the less they offer or take it.

When DD was 13 she cleared out the majority of her children and pre-teen books. We kept some where there is a sentimental value or books I already owned and the rest went to a primary school where her Scout leader worked.

When she cleared the next lot, we brought them plus books we didn't want either and left them at our train station which has a book shelf. We also have book boxes from the Rotary club all over town.
