Dd after advice from her GP came to a&e at 3.15pm.
She has numbness in legs and now arms.
Feels as though water is running down her legs. It isn't really
Saw someone at 4.20pm to take BP etc.
Told she is to have a scan.
We don't know if its a CT or MRI.
The wait when we came was 2hours 50mins
Now it's 7 hours 40 mins.
Two people have discharged themselves.
10 are in wheelchairs. 5 are waiting for a bed.
Of course I don't know what other people have wrong with them.
But some go into triage room and out again and then in again.

There is no one to ask. Maybe just catch a nurse when they call someone in.
How long should I leave before asking if the scan will be soon.

How’s things op?

Jennalong · 15/04/2025 07:37

Sounds terrible , hope your dd has been seen now and no further decline.

I was horrified when we spent a night in A and E in the waiting room. There was a young teen who had overdosed and it was the wrong place for them, elderly people who needed to sleep but sat upright in wheelchairs, etc etc.

Its beyond breaking point and inhumane.

JojoM1981 · 15/04/2025 09:00

Hope you're getting seen now.
Last year my daughter had a suspected fracture in her arm. She was x-rayed and home within almost 4 hours.

Nextdoortomeis · 15/04/2025 12:08

Thank you for your messages.

Dd was finally seen at 12.50am.
Unfortunately they couldn't give her a scan as it closed at midnight.
Told they will send for her to have a mri.
But if it gets worse or she can't go to the loo she was given a pass to fast track.

As we left no one who was waiting for a bed got one.
In the 2 hours before she was seen not one person was seen by triage.

At one point it came over the tannoy there were 137 people in minors and majors.
Plus ambulances.

This can't go on. Something needs changing but I don't know what.

How is she now? 💐💐

Worryabouteverything · 15/04/2025 12:54

DD of course is shattered. Legs still feel numb. Feelings in her arms are ok no pins and needles.
She is going to wait for an appointment. But at least knows she can return if it gets worse.
Family do have problems with their backs.
Ds had 5 growths removed the year before last from his vertebrae. The doctor made a note to check these out as well.

QuickPeachPoet · 15/04/2025 13:29

Poor girl. I hope she gets some answers today

CheekySwan · 15/04/2025 13:41

My dad spent 12 hours in A&E for a water infection, sent by his GP surgery, some of the wait times are ridiculous

MarilynSays · 15/04/2025 13:43

This made me feel so sad when I was reading it, sounds almost identical to something my friend went through. Please get an MRI and refuse lumbar punctures. Then a consultant neurologist can tell if it's anything like a mini stroke or possible multiple sclerosis. Wishing your DD all the best, and please look after yourself.

ShowOfHands · 15/04/2025 13:51

I really hope your DD is okay.

I had to visit a&e for the first time last year after an accident. I arrived at 8pm and needed stitches (8 in total it turned out, nasty wound). They have a minor injuries next door which closes at 11pm but I wasn't allowed in as they already had so many people that they knew they wouldn't get through them. I sat in the waiting room with a person withdrawing and hallucinating, a man who had had a serious industrial accident, a woman who had been mauled by a dog, a woman miscarrying, a woman who had two seizures while I was there and an assortment of other ailments. I was finally seen at 4am and by that point, both the man who'd had the industrial accident and I had been rewrapped in bandages 7 times between us as we kept bleeding through the bandages and making a mess. They sluiced the wound and stitched it in around 15 minutes and then sent me back to A&E as I needed a tetanus jab and the guy stitching wasn't able to authorise it. Another 2hrs later, they called me back through for a jab which took 30 seconds.

It was appalling. I had a book, water and snacks but goodness only knows what it was like for some of those poor people.

Husband was knocked off hospital motorbike by a motorist last week. Wait time in a&e was 12 hours and they asked several people (including my husband) to come back the next day. Which annoyed me as he had a head and neck injury. I felt like after having a 550lb bike land on top of him, a trauma assessment would be needed. Thankfully he got seen properly the next day and thankfully has just whiplash and a few fractures- could have been a lot worse! Hope your daughter is ok.

NCTDN · 16/04/2025 12:38

@Nextdoortomeishow is she now?

mondaytosunday · 16/04/2025 13:18

Wow. But people do get ‘lost’ especially if busy. My son at age four went in with suspected broken arm and after four hours my DH asked how much longer to be told they had it that he’d already been seen!
However more to your specific case. My DD (17) was told to go to A&E after she called 111 with numbness and pins and needles down her right side. We didn’t have to wait too long - a couple hours, even though the room was rammed. The initially dismissive doctor did move her to paediatric A&E which was still busy, and we were one of the last seen. The doctor said she needed an MRI and fortunately they had a cancellation the next day, as there was no question that she’d get one that night. She was admitted the next day after her scan which showed lesions on her brain and spine, later (weeks later) diagnosed with MS. @MarilynSaysa lumbar puncture was essential in getting this diagnosis! MS is a process of elimination, there’s no positive test for it. Our hospital is one of the best for neurological issues and though the consultant told us after the MRI she thought it was MS they still needed to run other tests to eliminate other causes.
OP it is hard when you know the staff are rushed off their feet, but it was this one visit that finally gave us some answers to years of issues and inconclusive tests results at a different hospital (she’d also had two previous MRIs, one privately due to the six month wait after initial referral when she was 13).
The NHS is an amazing service, but it doesn’t function well in a crisis situation.

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/04/2025 13:35

I had this, they suspected Cauda Equine last year. The GP gave me an urgent letter but I still had to wait. It was the weekend though in a major city centre A&E the amount of people in for drink and drug related issues and the amount handcuffed to the Police over the 14 hours I was there was eye opening. I did however get an MRI though in that time. Dr said borderline for MRI but that to be referred would take at least a month so he was going to get it done. I had 3 bulgung discs in my back and had pulled my piriformis muscle as well pulling DH over in to the recovery position when he was knocked out unconscious a few weeks before. We had not been in an A&E for 15 years and were then there twice in about 6 weeks. I then had emergency physio within 6 days every week for 10 weeks.

Good luck, I would go back and wait. It was the shortage of Doctors at the hospital I was at.

NewAgeNewMe · 17/04/2025 07:49

How’s your dd?

Nextdoortomeis · 18/04/2025 20:40

Dd had to go back to a&e in the early hours of this morning. Was actually admitted to hospital as she had no feelings in both legs and is struggling to pass urine or stools.
They have said she is very swollen in her back. Put her on a drip and they hope she will be able to have an mri tomorrow as with her being swollen it won't be clear.
She is now able to go to the loo for both things.
