I need to drive for an hour but I’m unwell

I had a stressful week last week and I was on my menstrual cycle so it felt worse.
Then on Friday I ate some ham that was in date but the packet was full of condensation and I got ill so it was either that or my IBS.
my stomach hasn’t recovered and I even dreamt about being ill. I feel nauseous and dizzy but that could be my anxiety.
I’ve got mint tea and a hot water bottle but want to be well enough by dinner time to drive for an hour (it’s half an hour there and back)

Get some buccastem from the chemist. It’s for migraine nausea but still works for other nausea

PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe · 14/04/2025 14:25

Mint tea is obviously great for stomach but ginger tea is excellent for nausea.

Dizziness & nausea can also be caused by dehydration so if you've lost fluids get some diarolyte and take as per instructions.

You shouldn't be driving if you feel dizzy, though.

I don’t think I should drive at all. I don’t think it’s wise to push through. I am dizzy as well. Just wondered if I could.

What are you supposed to be going out for? Is it a problem to not go?

if I cancelled then it would be the 3rd time in a row due to illness. I always have some kind of illness/ailment

Honestly I don’t think you should drive if you’re that ill and dizzy.

I have a friend who often cancels due to illness but she always explains she’s too ill to get there but would love to chat on the phone when we were meant to meet, is that an option? It softens the blow of her cancelling.

Ok but if you're ill, it's not a problem to cancel surely?

I don't fully understand what you want people to say?

MemorableTrenchcoat · 14/04/2025 14:42

If you feel dizzy, you shouldn’t be operating any heavy machinery, including motor vehicles. It does sound as though your anxiety is getting the better of you though. A bit of moisture inside a packet of ham does not indicate that it’s unfit for consumption.

TheShiningCarpet · 14/04/2025 14:48

its almost like you really don't want to go where you are supposed to be going....

best not to drive if dizzy eh

CheeseAndHamToastieAndCrisps · 14/04/2025 14:58

If you’re unwell all the time is it your anxiety? If a friend cancelled on me three times I’m not sure I would arrange again if I’m honest.

doodleschnoodle · 14/04/2025 15:00

is it really that you’re too ill to go, OP, or that whatever it is, you don’t want to go or are anxious about going, so are finding a reason not to?

If you’re always ill or coming down with stuff when you have plans, maybe it’s more of an emotional response.

regardless, if you don’t feel safe to drive then don’t go.

PersephonesPomegranate · 14/04/2025 15:06

All sounds rather dramatic, to be honest. Breaking it down you had a busy week on your period with a jippy tummy (upset tummy is a pretty common side effect of your cycle). Perfectly reasonable to have some anxiety with that kind of week too. The addition of random dizziness makes it sound like you're looking for an excuse to bail out for the third time as it's a bit of a leap from the other symptoms to being unsafe to drive.

Do you have health anxiety, generally?

Overall, if you don't feel well and/or don't want to go... don't. You're an adult and can make these decisions for yourself. however, don't expect whoever you're meeting to reschedule for a 4th time.

What is it you would be cancelling, something important or not?

Blondebrownorred · 14/04/2025 15:41

Is it anxiety causing these symptoms? It sounds like you'd like justification not to go.

Do you actually want to go? It very much sounds as if you don’t.

faerietales · 14/04/2025 15:58

If you've had to cancel three times due to illness, are you sure it's not just your anxiety and you just don't want to go?

Mylovemine · 14/04/2025 19:15

you talked some sense into me and I managed to calm my anxiety down enough to go. I did feel unwell but I was fine. I suffer from terrible IBS

OP posts:
AlphabettiTouretti · 14/04/2025 19:37

Please don't drive if you feel really ill. There are other people on the road and you may endanger them.

It doesn't sound like you actually NEED to drive at all - it really doesn't sound like an emergency. If it is, maybe consider getting an Uber. But all of this is sounding like a big stress over not much, tbh.

Newyorklady · 14/04/2025 19:41

Your employer might see this as a pattern.
or excuses.
if your attendance in office is regular then as a Manager I wouldn’t see wfh as an issue if you are too unwell to travel.
Problem is if you regularly find reasons not to go in.
i know the staff members who are genuine and I know the ones constantly finding excuses.
Depends which one you are.
