Does anyone have air con?

I feel like I spend quite a bit every year on fans in every room of the house to keep us all cool. The fans invariably break or we can't find them the next summer so I had a bright idea to invest in a portable air con unit that keeps the house cold (or at least the upstairs) and then can be stored away for the 10 months of the year it isn't needed.

Does anyone have a one they can recommend? It's a lot to spend blindly and I don't know anyone who has one!

We have units that can cool or heat the air. They are brilliant as we have them fixed in our bedroom and lounge areas

All a/c units can heat and cool. 😎 it’s great though to have a back up if your boiler goes in the winter.

We have bedrooms that face West so in summer they are sweltering! DH works unsociable hours and goes to bed at 6pm and struggled to sleep because of the heat. We invested in two portable air con units that were about £300 each.(think they have come down in price a bit now) Worth every penny. The energy bill takes a bit of a hit but it's still worth it.

Yeah, I definitely need colder bedrooms in the summer. When the kids can't sleep they come into my bed which means I feel even hotter! Do you remember what make of unit you have?

It’s a Chilly. It’s a few years old now but think it was around £400.

It is not invisible but neither is it offensive, well I don’t find it so.

Yes we have an air source heat pump in part of the house. It is a heating system but works in reverse and is lovely as air con on hot days.

We have a black and decker air conditioner machine thingy. Huge, with a funnel that does outside. Husband uses it for working from home in the summer. I can’t sleep with it on

We have a electriQ AirFlex 14000. We bought it when we had a loft conversion done a couple of years ago. It does a great job, it would be unbearable to sleep without it in the summer.

Yes we had 3 portable aircon units. Then put in a single fixed wall mounted aircon for one bedroom. Then put it in the whole house. Now will need to spend £600 yearly to have all 6 units serviced. But we need it as son has severe hayfever and eczema.

We started with a portable one but then had a fitted unit installed last year. We have a west facing bedroom, husband has very early starts (so goes to bed at 6pm) and we live near a main road so we wanted the air con benefits with the windows shut.

Best money we have spent.

The built in units are much more efficient than portable ones
I think they are VAT free too because most do heating AND air con and the former is considered a low carbon way to heat your home (don’t shoot the messenger). You don’t have to use the heating though.
we had three installed recently at a cost of £5k including installation. I was sceptical but within a day of the recent heatwave I dropped any possible exception. This is in the north of England btw
