Weird hip problem

About 6 months ago my hip started to hurt a bit - aches and sore like the joint was a bit sore. This has gradually got a bit worse.

the last few weeks the skin and tissue surrounding the whole hip has become sensitive and the weird change in sensations, sort of itchy and uncomfortable.

today it unbearably sore and tender. I can have anything in my pocket. It If I was to put by hand spread flat on my hip bone it would be the whole area. The skin looks normal and i don’t think is hot.

Im on holiday in the US and don’t feel it warrant emergency care but it’s so weird I’m intrigueed as to what I might be. I also take Tramadol SR twice a day for my back and ibuprofen x 3 daily.

Possibly bursitis. Very painful.

I had the same thought after a quick google. I will have to call the gp 😭

I have had this since August.. when it was awful for a month then died down to a dull ache & has flared up again ten days ago after a long car drive.
It’s been diagnosed as GTPS & I’m at the end of my tether with it. I couldn’t cope with clothes or anything even touching my skin in that area (it spread from right hip to sacrum at the back & lower abdomen/pubic area at front) for a whole week in August & had to just wear an elasticated skirt! It felt like I had a massive burn all over the skin which wasn’t hot to match. No loss of movement, just pain.
Ice packs really help & a 2 week course of prescribed anti inflammatories (Naproxen) then it’s decent physio which I’m about to seek out. Try not to sleep on the affected side & sleep with a pillow between your knee to reduce the angle & pressure on the hip (it’s actually the trochanter)
I’ve found it completely debilitating & am a bit scared I’m never going to get rid of it.

@paperclip
that sound like it!! I thought I was going a bit mad- it is so weird. The hip hurts and the skin hurts but I can not see anything. My shorts now hurt and it feels on fire. Least I have some decent pain killers for my back. I’m so sick of getting older and I’m only 45

Is it definitely your hip? I pulled a muscle in my back and the pain was in the hip are. I didn't realise at the time that I'd done it.

fatgirlswims · 13/04/2025 05:28

Yes it’s my hip- I already have a chronic low back problem.

it’s very weird it’s hot but not actually hot! Very sore now :(

I can’t find out what GTPS stands for can. Can someone tell he please ? Thanks.

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome.

AstoriaWaldorfSalad · 13/04/2025 10:52

I've got GTPS and a combo of physio and anti inflammatories is the only thing that has made a difference.

https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/muscle-bone-and-joints/leg-and-foot-problems-and-conditions/greater-trochanteric-pain-syndrome/

Common in women aged 40-60, may be linked to hormonal changes.

Be very careful with this. I've just spent a week in hospital due to GTPS/bursitis. Been suffering from it for months, PT wasn't helping at all. Pain spread right down to my ankle meaning extra pressure on my back = protruding disc. Every single nerve in my leg and foot was compressed.

Go get a steroid shot!

I ended up going to A&E during my first flare up where the pain was 11/10 and I was climbing out of my skin with it over the weekend.
They told me (off the record) that I needed an MRI & good private physio and that nothing the NHS could offer would help. I did self referral for NHS physio and an outsourced company phoned me up, listed 5 exercises over the phone and told me to google them then signed me off. It was piss poor and here I am 9 months later wondering if it’s possible to recover from GTPS & not be in pain

Did you get any good advice in hospital?
I’m desperate to overcome it just to be out of pain. I also really, really miss running.

fatgirlswims · 14/04/2025 01:02

thanks everyone this is helpful

I’m convinced it bursitis. It’s change a little today and is more painful over the hip but less general weird burning sensations. So it’s a bit more bearable.

we did a short nature hike and then sat down

in pub - the walk was fine but hurt after sitting! Now in hot tub- probably the worst for inflammation but it’s nice and soothing!

I've actually got this now, but it's over the right side about the waist area. As the OP says, it feels like it's burning, but there's nothing to see. I've also got bad adhesions.. I wonder if this might be causing it, too. I haven't been to the GP yet, but I will and will mention Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome.
