Going tomorrow. A friend and I have a couple of hours to amuse ourselves. Arriving on the train. Don’t want to go shopping.

Any ideas?

Pop over to Sutton Coldfield for the food market

PunksVersusBrats · 12/04/2025 18:47

National Trust 'Back-to-Backs' if they have spaces (have to book). Fascinating tour.

Ted27 · 12/04/2025 18:47

Musuem and Art gallery is near New Street

Cadbury world!

Or the think tank, or botanical gardens.

budgiegirl · 12/04/2025 18:55

Jewellery Quarter museums. Or just hit a cocktail bar!

Hedonism · 12/04/2025 18:56

The police museum next to the children's hospital is good, if you like that sort of thing!

Cadbury World would take too long I think, especially if getting there from city centre.

Walk along the canal, visit the library (stunning building), also see the cherry blossoms at Oozells square and visit the Ikon gallery. Get a drink outside somewhere nice. Just wander around and follow the signs that interest you.

You probably wouldn't get into the back to backs at this short notice - I went a few weeks ago after years of trying (but I'm disorganised and took a while to realise you have to book almost a month in advance).

SonoPazziQuestiRomani · 12/04/2025 19:29

Go and see the Library of Birmingham, then walk over to Brindley Place/Oozells Square, then along the canal to the Jewellery Quarter/ St Paul's Square, then back to the station.

Or go to Think Tank museum or Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

If the weather is decent go for a stroll down the canals - a load of nice pubs, bars and eateries along there and into the Mailbox. Brindleyplace is good too.
I used to live in Birmingham and spent many Sunday afternoons up there.

Sutton Coldfield is a good shout if you want to get out of the city centre. Get a train from Birmingham New Street, takes 17 mins and the town centre is a 5 min walk.

Have they sorted the bins? If not make sure it’s something indoors, a colleague said it was crawling with rats recently.

Newyorklady · 12/04/2025 19:37

Visit Brindley place.

Massive exaggeration. Place isn’t crawling with rats.

Inlimboin50s · 12/04/2025 19:48

Half of the city will be at Wembley tomorrow!

Nonsense.

Go to the library. Fabulous views from the top. Then walk along the canal. Have a look at the Roundhouse.

Ddakji · 12/04/2025 19:51

If the weather is nice head over to the Botanical Gardens and/or Winterbourne Gardens. You might be able to walk to the Botanical Gardens along the canal?
The Back to Backs look interesting too, and I love the Museum & Art Gallery.

If you just have a couple of hours, you won't have time to visit many places.

Walk from the train up New Street to Victoria Square (Council House, Town Hall, Floozy in the Jacuzzi)
Through Chamberlain Square to
Centenary Square. Go into the Library of Birmingham. Look at the Shakespeare Room and go up on to the roof top garden.
Walk though the ICC past the Symphony Hall out to the Canals.

If weather not great then Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is in Chamberlain Square.

Danikm151 · 12/04/2025 19:55

With 2 hours it would all depend on what you fancy doing and at what time.
Library will be closed as it’s sunday.
part of the museum and art gallery is back open- just 1 level but the tea rooms are open. It’s free to enter.

Or head on up to Brindley place/the Mailbox for lunch.

Indeed, I had 2 days in the city and didn't actually know about the bin strike until someone mentioned it.

Plus as well as having some work meetings I had a very pleasant wander around in a nice, interesting city.
