I'm pretty sure I would. Or be alive with one leg.

All three of my children had pneumonia when they were little, dread to think what would have happened without IV antibiotics. Ihave had ABs for chest infections, tonsillitis etc.

Definitely. Spleen removed 38 years ago so impaired immunity from capsulated bacteria . In hospital average 2-3 times a year for minor infections that require IV antibiotics. The first bout of tonsillitis at 27 would have finished me off.

Several times over, appendicitis, optical cellulosis, bacterial conjunctivitis and most recently one of those horsefly things got me and infected me.

Ok, reference my previous email…just seen this on bbcnews…worse stats around resistance
Three million child deaths linked to drug resistance, study shows https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy0xk86l9g9o

A computer generated image of the Escherichia coli bacteria - also known as E. coli, the bug that causes food poisoning. It is depicted as a green, slightly furry tube with purple whispy strands.

Three million child deaths linked to drug resistance

Children in Africa and South East Asia are most at risk from antibiotics medicines no longer working, a study suggests.

Yes, I got put on them last year and they cured my infection. Painful as hell but consultant said sometimes benefits outweigh costs

Not that poster, but I’ve had very painful stomach pains on antibiotics and had a muscle pain issue with one.

Oh it was so painful at the time having them fighting the disease. This isn't about me though sorry to derail

ODFOx · 13/04/2025 22:48

Yes, a variety of nasty cuts/scrapes in the great outdoors over the years, a mosquito bite allergy that meant that they had to debride down to the tendons ( it was ripe for infection) and one bout of post-partum sepsis with 10 days in HDU and nearly 3 months on the ward).

Bingbangboo · 13/04/2025 23:17

After giving birth I had a horrendous infection which caused my episiotomy stitches to fail and an appalling open wound down there. Many rounds of antibiotics and what felt like forever to shift the infection. As my son was wrenched from my body via forceps in the first place, I suspect I/we probably would have died in childbirth first in the olden days.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 13/04/2025 23:20

Uterine infection in pregnancy leading to sepsis. Son was given only 1 in 20 chance of survival as it was, so there's no doubt at all he wouldn't have made it without modern antibiotics. Unlikely I would have, either.

maybejustonemorebiscuit · 13/04/2025 23:20

Don’t think I would have made it out of early childhood, multiple bouts of severe tonsillitis and chest infections.

Equimum · 14/04/2025 06:14

Absolutely. I tore badly giving birth to DC1. I then had a uterine infection following a miscarriage which required hospitalisation and further IV antibiotics. A couple of years ago, I then had cellulitis following a wasp sting. Again, back in hospital on IV. Interestingly, though, without medical interventions of different types, I would my have even made it to the stage of needing of these antibiotics. In my late teens, I spent time in ICU for things that didn't require antibiotics but would have killed me without intervention.

fishkettle · 14/04/2025 09:06

My DS might be - sepsis, thankfully caught incredibly early - followed by a week in hospital with IV ABs, daily home visits from nurse to administer more and then oral ABs for weeks after that. He was really quite ill even with early intervention. So praise the Lord for antibiotics as I’m certain they saved his life.
