Roof cleaning?

I keep seeing businesses advertising roof cleaning recently. Is this just something appearing locally to me or is it nationwide? Is there any point to having your roof cleaned or is it just a new house 'trend'? I can't help but think people must have money to burn if they're getting their house roof cleaned.

We had ours cleaned around covid. Also had it painted and sealed.
Really needed a new roof but were trying to delay for a bit and managed to get until now out of it.
Seems the new trend but there was a massive difference in prices.

We had ours cleaned when we moved in - it was covered in moss, and our survey advised it needed to be removed. Apparently (according to the roof people) it can block air flow and cause problems with damp.

I suspect there are companies which “clean” (ie waft a pressure washer over it and leave you a bill) and others which do it properly.

I’ve noticed the same lately—seems like more companies are offering it now. I think it can be useful in some cases, like if there’s a lot of moss or algae that might damage shingles over time. But yeah, in other cases it might just be cosmetic. Probably depends on the type of roof and how bad it actually looks.

If you have tiles in your roof and the house is more than 30 y.o., it really is a must. It makes sure the tiles are structurally in place, get rid of moss, replace broken/damage tiles and the followed painting add years to the tiles. It's not just roof cleaning, it's roof repairs.

Make sure you have several quotes and ask what they provide before doing it. I don't know in the UK but when I did it for my house in Australia, the difference was thousands of dollars between quotes for the same job.

We had ours done earlier this week. We have just moved in and the roof was covered in moss, they hand scraped all the moss off, cleaned the tiles and then treated the roof with a biocide solution to prevent moss regrowth. They also cleared the moss/weeds from the block paving, treated that and resanded. It looks loads better.

And the moss they removed weighed a ton! Imagine that sitting on your tiles, weighing them down. Especially when wet, moss soaks up and holds the water and the additional weight could evenutually damage your roof.

Birds clean the moss from mine, but then it's all over the path. In Winter they look for grubs under it, in Spring it's used to line their nests.
Those with a newly Barco tiled roof want algae to grow, so to mellow the colour.

My neighbour had her roof cleaned last year. The spray and splashes killed all my plants on that side of my garden. Not a fan.

My landlord recently had my gutters cleaned, they were full of moss and dirt that had come off the roof, and rainwater was spilling down the walls.

Roof cleaning is a real nationwide service, not just a local trend. It can help remove moss and algae, protect your roof, and improve curb appeal—but for many, it’s mostly cosmetic. Only worth it if your roof actually needs it.

Companies don't even try to be subtle anymore with breaking the advertising rules do they. You've literally got your company name as your username
