Greasy hair

My hair has always been very thin/fine and goes greasy easily. In my mid 30's now and decided last year to chop most of it off to give it a chance at some volume, it's above chin length. When I wash and blow dry it, it looks great and full but by the very next day it is limp and greasy again no matter what I try, I use dry shampoo in between washing but I'm tired of it looking crap so I do wash it between 3-4 times per week so almost every other day. Now that it's short I can't even drag it back into a ponytail during the greasy day which is irritating. I've heard about "training" your hair by basically reducing the washing but how long would this technique take? I don't want to look greasy 😞 help!

The solution is to wash it every day. View it like brushing your teeth. At least your hair is fine and short so won't take too long to wash or dry it. Training hair is, I think, nonsense unfortunately. I sympathise, with my longish thickish super greasy hair.

Why can’t you just wash it every other day if that’s what it needs?

I have naturally frizzy hair and used to be able to leave it 4-5 days without washing. I now have it permanently keratin straightened twice a year and I find it needs washing every other day or it’s rank. Some hair just needs that!

I shower every day in the morning and wash my hair then. It's just part of the morning routine. Doesn't take long at all to dry it and it sounds like yours would be quick too.

Same problem here and I agree the only solution is to wash it when it's needed.
I have recently swapped dry shampoo from Batisse which I had used for years but recently it was doing nothing for the greasiness. I picked one up from tescos and the change seems to be doing the trick at the moment.
I have also bought a couple of silicon free / sulphate free shampoos and they also seem to be helping.
In addition to this I purchased some weleda scalp treatment tonic however it appears I may have an allergic reaction to it so if you go down this route I would do a skin patch test first.

Why can’t you just wash it everyday? Mine has to be washed daily so I just do it - only takes a couple of minutes in the shower.

I thought washing your hair everyday was supposed to be bad for the hair, stripping it of natural oils n all that crap, no?

Mine's fine, I condition it too quickly. It's better than greasy hair whatever!

Talisin · 12/04/2025 09:56

I’ve always assumed the ‘don’t wash every day, it’s bad for your hair!’ advice people are all the sort of smug bastards who have perfect, non oily hair and have no idea what the rest of us suffer. I have washed my hair every day since I was a tweenager (now in my 50s) and nothing terrible has happened to it!

Everyone is different, though. These kinds of “rules” are never going to apply to every single person.

I’d personally rather have non-greasy hair than worry about natural oils.

Ineedanewsofa · 12/04/2025 10:00

Wash mine pretty much every other day due to going to the gym etc (who are these people who don’t get sweaty hair?!) as it’s fine and goes greasy quickly.
I have found that using a scalp scrub once a week stops it getting greasy as quickly snd I can go 2-3 days without a wash (if not exercising on those days). I also switched dry shampoo to one that actually cleans your hair so I can get an additional day that way too

Realisation14 · 12/04/2025 10:20

@Ineedanewsofa ooh what is a scalp scrub? And can you recommend the new dry shampoo you're trying?

Yes this. I tried ages to reduce hair washing and was told lots of times by people with thick lovely hair that I shouldn’t.

I do have dry shampoo days when I’m WFH but I can only ever skip a day max.

Fine, lank, greasy. Urgh, I used to love my hair.

butterballbrown2 · 12/04/2025 11:42

I wash my hair everyday. It’s a pain and I wish I was one of these people with long, thick hair that didn’t go greasy and had lots of body to it. But alas, not.

I do put dry shampoo on before bed. This prevents it getting greasy overnight and it looks ok in the morning then. This is usually when I need to be out somewhere early and won’t have time for a full hair wash and style. I always end up washing it later on though because I just feel itchy and gross otherwise.

mindutopia · 12/04/2025 12:01

I’d say wash it less often and skip the dry shampoo. My hair has never been more greasy than when I was washing it daily. I currently wash it maybe every 7-10 days. Never use dry shampoo or any product. More often only if dirty, like proper covered in sand or horse hair from my horse. It’s lovely, soft and not greasy. We use too much crap in our hair. Less really is more.

lambinapram · 12/04/2025 14:01

One tip i got from here, don't wait until your hair needs washing to use dry shampoo. Currently I wash, dry with hairdryer, spray tons of dry shampoo, wait a bit then remove excess, then respray every night. My hair still looks good on day 4, previously I had to wash it every day. I use bastille thickening one.

Realisation14 · 12/04/2025 14:04

Thanks everyone will be trying all these tips and products absolutely! Another thing is every time I was my hair a good lot falls out even though it's short which is probably why it's staying so fine so I do worry if I was it too much am I eventually going to end up with patchy or even thinner hair 🙈

My hair is noticeably greasy if I don't wash it every day, and I was told so many times that washing my hair every day is a bad thing... I ended up believing it - so I stopped washing my hair every day and gave this a go for a year - washing it every other day or every 2 days. Over time I ended up with a really sore scalp that would crust over. Needless to say, I'm back to washing it every day and my scalp and hair are looking and feeling loads better. As annoying as it is to wash it every day, I'd take this over a red, sore, crusty and greasy scalp any day.
