How would you split this cost?

Uk holiday with DP. On a bit of a whim I invited a just adult DC to come with us. I'll cover his cost, DP is not his dad and doesn't live with us. TBH I didn't expect DS to say yes, but it's good news that he did. He'll mostly go off and do his own thing, for various reasons this will be good for him and DP is supportive for that.

Anyway that's meant I've now changed the 1 bed apartment to a 2 bed cottage, although the cost is only c. £100 extra.

DS will join us halfway through the week because of work commitments.

I'm thinking keep it simple and split 3 ways withnme paying 2/3, but also think I might be shortchanging myself like that because the extra cost of DS coming is only £100 (total cost £700). OTOH you could argue DS's share is half, as he'll have one of the 2 rooms, so I should pay 3/4.

Fwiw, I don't expect it to be a big issue, just wondering what to suggest.

I don't know I haven't asked. I've booked and he's asked me to let him know what he owes, which is when I started trying to work it out.

Yes probably, but this is something I want to do for him. He'll have to pay his own transport when he travels up to join us and he'll pay his own food and drink and entertainment while we're away. It's not about that.

I’d pay the extra £100 and get the food shop in for the week. If eating out all together I’d pay 2/3

You pay £400 to your partners £300 can't see why you need to pay 2/3 towards accommodation, pay 2/3 towards food drink etc.

ClearHoldBuild · 11/04/2025 16:35

I’d be amazed if my DP would accept me offering to pay extra. We’d just split it 50/50 still. But I suppose it depends on how long you have been together.

I agree with this.

You pay £400 , your partner pays £300

Yes, that was my original instinct, then I realised inviting DS had cost me more than I thought 🤣

Just split the initial cost in half with DP and pay the extra 100 for the extra costing to have your summer along that's perfectly fair😊

I intend to pay it, at least the £100, but splitting cost by person or by room will cost me more than £100

Why would you split by room though? It’s not costing your DP any more that it was going to. This isn’t like a group of people and several rooms. It’s you and your DP. Then you are adding your 19 year old. So just you cover the extra costs

Ener · 11/04/2025 17:47

Just pay the original half and another £100 and if your partner thinks he should pay more just say no. Easy

I would treat it as a new holiday - because it is. New number of people, new accommodation. And if it's three adults then each pays a third.

I can’t imagine being with a partner who gleefully accepts a cheaper holiday than they had planned because my DPs 19 year old son was now coming. No way would I expect a 19 year old son to pay the same as me. Nor would I accept my DP to pay so now I was better off financially.

but you might like that kind of relationship.

if my hypothetical DP and I were paying 350 each and I was then happy with their 19 yr old DC to join us I would presume only that my DP would pay the extra. Infact I for 50 I would just tell them we’d still halve it. Because I’m not an arsehole.

Eh? I'm not remotely insinuating that anyone gets anything 'cheaper' off the back of anyone else, I was just working it out in terms of three adults contributing. You're assuming that the son is less finally able to contribute and if he is then that is a different story, but there's nothing in the OP to suggest that is the case. I was just basing it off pure maths and not family dynamics about which I know nothing because it's not MY family. I'm not an arsehole either, no need to jump down my throat. I've spent most of my life subsidising others if it's anything to you. Sheesh.
