I want money

Just that really. I love money (who doesn't?) and I want more of it than I currently have. I work a 50 hour week to have a decent wage. I just want enough money to live like we do now AND (this is the bit I cant afford atm) also be able to take off for a long weekend on a whim, all 5 of us (DC & DH), to Europe to enjoy the sun and not worry about the cost. But bank holiday prices are ridiculous and add in the cost to get to the airport plus flight/luggage/seats/insurance/accommodation/food&drink and it's a small fortune. I want money to buy a decent car that is not on credit. Not necessarily a brand new car or a flashy/top of the range one, but a modern one. Ours is 12 years old and slowly falling to bits. We paid for it over a 5 year credit plan. I don't want 5 years of credit again, it felt like a prison sentence last time.

I cannot work any more hours. Dh works FT too.

Friday rant !

Yes, that’s fair enough.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/04/2025 11:19

YANBU the price of everything just keeps going up and wages aren't rising at the same rate. I think I've technically had a pay cut for the last 5 years even though my salary has actually risen. It's crazy what a decent salary actually buys these days. I don't feel any better off than when I started work as a graduate 25 years ago.

Soonenough · 11/04/2025 11:28

So true. Money you earn now doesn't seem to go far enough to cover the things it used to do. Everything is much more expensive now and previously obtainable items like holidays, cars , etc. can seem very out of reach . Wages might be going up but not enough to cover the rises which leaves a shortfall. What is really worrying is the amount of people who are working FT and can't afford basic living costs like housing , food, energy ,transport as well as things like Council Tax .

Stickortwigs · 11/04/2025 11:32

In my experience that point never comes though. I keep thinking ‘I’ll do X when we have the disposable income’ but despite earning more and more, I can’t quite bring myself to think I’m at the point where I can let loose.

yorkshiretealass05 · 11/04/2025 11:35

@Stickortwigs same. It's a never-ending target for us and one we will probably will get to the end of. No matter how much we earn, there is never enough to go round.

Could you move to a more lucrative industry?

yorkshiretealass05 · 11/04/2025 11:38

@MidnightPatrol unfortunately not an option. I am in my 50s and don't want to be re-training again. My only option is promotion, that would be a £13k payrise. Promotion to the next level is hard and a huge jump. I would need to side-step in my current role, to get more experience, then in a year apply for promotion. Competition is huge where I work though

Me too. I love the possibilities money brings.

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 11/04/2025 11:53

Tell me about it. Our household income 15 years ago was 10k more than it is now (I can no longer work due to illness, DH has only had a couple of small pay rises) and we've gone from pretty comfortably off to living on a really tight budget. It's so depressing.

anonny55 · 11/04/2025 11:56

Yep. I heard on the radio national living wage has gone up but there will also be an increase in bills. It’s a shame the wages don’t go up the amount the bills do

PigInADuvet · 11/04/2025 11:56

We're in a similar situation although with one child (a decision based largely on affordability!). Having 3 kids is an expensive choice and no doubt plays a part - needing a certain size car, 2 hotel rooms etc?

StartingAgainFGS · 11/04/2025 11:58

Me too!! Not loads, just enough for the fun / nice stuff, a wee weekend away here and there and maybe a week in the sun!

Soonenough · 11/04/2025 13:05

The only decrease will be when the DCs are financially self sufficient. But a hell of a long time to wait for a holiday!

LBFseBrom · 11/04/2025 13:28

I think your wants are entirely reasonable. I remember wanting the same years ago. It often seemed as though I/we were working for nothing.

It did get easier with time and it will for you, always does.

I'm now 75, widowed and relatively comfortable, glad to leave the stress behind. I can (quietly) help the younger ones to have a better life.

£2k return EasyJet for 5 people to fly to Spain for the easter weekend. I never even got to the luggage/seat costs or accommodation/insurance

DISGUSTING

Its supply and demand

Yep it’s frustrating. I’m better off than many but have cancelled some of the extras that brought me a lot if pleasure - magazine subscriptions, my PT, I used to change my car every three years (always buy second hand though) but now have had mine for more than five, holidays every other year rather than every year…

It is hard isn't it, I agree money is amazing and creates more opportunities and a better standard of living. Money buys happiness in my opinion, I grew up in poverty and it was crap. Now I am not in poverty and I am so much happier. Money gives you peace of mind and not have to be in crappy jobs. Money is like oxygen.
