Would you recommend Monzo bank accounts for children?

I'm looking for a bank account with a debit card for my 9yo where they can view their account via an app & I can also view their account.
I'd like to be able to freeze the card in the event of loss of the card. And I'd like to be able to set spend limits.

So far, Monzo seems to tick that box but I am very happy to hear of any alternatives that offer these features. (Or more!)
I've had a quick look online at various options. but I'd really like some "tried and tested" accounts.
They already have a separate savings account.

We've got them for the kids, one of the only ones that don't charge a fee, and we already bank with Mono so it was a no brainer really.

Yes! Monzo is fab. I use Monzo for myself (day to day budgeting) and it’s so easy. Get their own cards, can transfer pocket money easily to them and it’s free

Itsdewaltday · 10/04/2025 22:32

We used revolute which does all that. Also nice and easy for me or DC to share a link for family and friends to transfer money for birthday/Christmas money.

Absolutely yes, mine (11 & 13) both have Monzo, it’s super easy to use, full visibility with what they’re doing, really quick to go a transfer, cards come through very quickly, send a replacement card no issue etc etc!

The only challenge is that other people can’t easily transfer to them for birthdays etc, it has to come through you. But for day to day spending - brilliant!

TokyoSushi · 10/04/2025 22:34

I think you can share a link for people to transfer to them, but I’ve never tried it!

WildCountry · 11/04/2025 08:05

For younger children, the Monzo account isn't really theirs. It's just a pot of your own account which they can access. Works well though. Mine both have one.

We have the NatWest rooster cards as I get them free as a current customer. Does everything we need it to.

I don't know how I did it, I think I shared the account details of my dd with her dad but he can transfer directly to her account

Louisetopaz21 · 11/04/2025 08:35

If you click onto the three dots you can share the payment link

QueenKong101 · 11/04/2025 08:45

Starling do the same thing - my DCs have their own pots as a sub-section of my account, both with their own bank cards and apps. I can also keep an eye on transactions, freeze accounts etc.

scrimblescramble · 11/04/2025 08:50

I wouldn't recommend Monzo to anyone. There's a Facebook group called 'Monzo stole my money' they are renowned for closing accounts randomly and not giving money back for months if not years. I would stay far far away from them.

My youngest has a Starling (I have my main account with them) Couldn't recommend them highly enough.
It's a pot off my main account that I can add and withdraw from and others can get a direct link to add money for her.

Ineedanewsofa · 11/04/2025 08:55

We use Rooster (for free thanks to a random NatWest account with 60p in it!) and are very pleased with it so far, DD has created savings pots for different things and regularly asks for ways to earn more money! Very easy to manage from the parent side too

Dueanamechange2025 · 11/04/2025 08:56

Yes my DD12 has Monzo (moved from Revolut to avoid the fee). We all bank with Monzo now (me, DH & adult DS).

Giving people the link to add money was easy enough (this is a more recent addition, couldn’t do that when they first started).

The only other challenge I’ve found is, she can’t send money to anyone else, which I assume is a security feature but means she can’t pay her friends back when they by tickets or if he brother goes to the shop for her .

JojoM1981 · 11/04/2025 08:57

We used Revolute. No issues at all.

doodleschnoodle · 11/04/2025 09:00

Yes, we are all with Monzo. DD1(6) really likes her bright pink card Grin

Every bank can close your account without warning if they think there is any money laundering or questionable where the funds have come from. In the early days of Monzo a lot of people opened them thinking that they could use them for any means and wouldn’t need to prove what they money was for as they were not a high street bank.

They did freeze my DS’s account at one point when he made or received a paper from what must have been a dodgy account. He had to prove where his income was coming from and what a few transactions were. Once he did that, they reinstated the account. He made the same payment with his HSBC account and they also froze his account and he has to go in and do all the same with them. He then learnt his lesson of dealing with dodgy Turkish men!
