How to get enough fibre when I don't like grains?

I do need to up my intake but can't abide most popular grains. A minimally processed oat bar is as far as i could go, whilst wholegrain pasta, wholewheat bread, pulses, cereals, and quinoa/couscous type stuff really doesn't work for me so I don't want to force myself to eat it.

I eat very well usually with a ton of veg, moderate fruit and mostly fish.
I can deal with chia seeds sprinkled raw, and love nuts, avocado and ryvita, but that's about it. My diet it kinda Mediterranean without the....grains.

I guess I have some weird sensitivity issues with foods, so don't want to make anything more complex than it already is! I eat small meals 3 times per day as this suits my lifestyle and gut.

I am 51, past meno and fit, active, hiking, yoga, etc.

Any tips? More apple?

Dried fruit?

SomeEsotericJoke · 10/04/2025 20:59

Increase fruit intake - a fruit salad for breakfast, apples for snacks etc

It actually sounds like you’re getting a lot of fiber through the veg and nuts etc. you could try adding flax seeds to soups/ yogurts etc. also figs are a tasty sweet treat with a bit of fiber thrown in.

Baked beans

Psyllium husk - spoonful in a glass of water every morning.

And yes ground flaxseed disappears into a lot of things - yoghurts / shakes / porridge / muesli

Jacket potatoes with skins on.
Baked beans always help in that department.

Popcorn is high in fibre

AppleWhiskers · 11/04/2025 00:15

Did not know that about popcorn!
Thanks everyone.
I can't stand yogurt either sadly.
Will definitely increase fruit with skin on seeds.

Fruit and veg

Baked beans have a very powerful effect on me!

There's some really easy swaps you can make - Kiwi, raspberries, blueberries etc have much more fiber than an apple or banana for example.

Look at fibre content of fruit & veg so you can easily up your fiber without eating any more.
