So, I've just cleaned and organised my fridge. Looks great now, but really empty! There are 3 of us at home, me, DH, and Dd, 24. We eat most things, no allergies. Can get to all major supermarkets. Help me fill my fridge please!

You're working backwards.
You need to meal plan first, then fill your fridge with the ingredients for those meals

Do a Google search for some recipes!

Lots of cheese

I don't want to meal plan though😅

Asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli and wild garlic are all in season.
Butter, parmesan and another couple of cheeses.
Eggs, milk, tofu, salmon
Maybe some ham
Nice bread
New and baking potatoes
Onions, celery carrots

Not even a general idea of a plan?
So every evening you stand in front of your fridge and think hmm what shall I make with this random assortment of stuff? How does that work?

I agree with @Yesterdaywassunny buy lots to cheese to eat while you think! And wine and crackers and figs and membrello and salami and walnuts and grapes and pate and bread and salad vegetables... I just meal planned you a picky tea.

Jennifershuffles · 09/04/2025 18:29

Oh also,
Mayonnaise and mustard
And perhaps some salad leaves and a cucumber if you think you'll have a salad soon
Maybe some hummus and a cooked chicken

I've just had a shop delivered. DH is going to be away for a long weekend so I'm doing some batch cooking for the freezer. I'm making a fish pie with cod and smoked haddock, some savoury pork mince with lots of veg in and dried soup mix to bulk it out. Also a cassoulet with Toulouse sausage, belly pork, maybe some smoked pork sausage, at least 3 different kinds of dried beans, tomatoes and garlic.
I have a selection of delicatessen meats, some pate, salad veg including some cherry tomatoes on the vine, a couple of different kinds of bread, chicken breasts, purple sprouting broccoli, corn on the cob - lots of stuff. I have an inexplicable desire for cheese and celery sandwiches at present, so I have also bought celery, cream cheese with chives and thin sliced cheddar cheese to have with the nice rye and wheat seeded bread I have. Normally I would (of course) slice my own cheese but DH will be eating out and having takeaways so I thought sod it - I'm buying it ready sliced!

Interesting that some posters cant grasp the concept of spontaneity in the kitchen, yes people do stand in front of their fridges and cupboards and then decide what they want

Meal planning has its place but its also quite restrictive and boring in my view.

I’ve just eaten some lovely prawns with lots of garlic, parsley and harissa with a bit of lemon juice, some tenderstem broccoli, wilted spinach and stirfried, garlicky green beans. Highly recommend all of it!

Stinkbomb · 09/04/2025 18:59

I’ve just nipped to the shop and got a quiche, Spanish omelette, ham, cooked chicken, baking and new pots and salad stuff.
last night I made a ratatouille type dish with odds & ends of veg that needed using from the fridge. I love the spontaneity of just looking to see what I can throw together from what we have in the fridge, freezer & cupboards - that’s how we discover new tasty meals!!!
got some staples - always carrots, pots, a green veg, onions & peppers in as can cover loads of options, then see what’s seasonal/on offer and make meals out of them!

Ooh love talking about food shops. On the two occasions we’ve moved house my favourite thing to do is a food shop to fill the fridge! I’d get:

sausages
bacon
chedder cheese
tomatoes
celery, carrots, onions- useful base for so many dishes
minced beef
potatoes
chicken thighs
ginger and garlic
spinach/salad leaves
cucumber
natural yoghurt. Useful for curry’s and breakfasts etc
cottage cheese
ham for sarnies
lardons for carbonara
eggs
maybe single/double cream
parmasan
peppers
harissa paste/tomato purée

I could go on and on but that goes to cupboard/pantry stuff!
