Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

Christ if I have read ‘legal right to roam’ one more time…..

i hate the way they decimate the wildlife. The impact on the song bird population. Saw neighbour’s 2 cats injuring a baby bird once, passing it between them. Was truly horrific. Only animals that kill for fun. Big no from me. I do every thing legal to keep them out my garden.

They're not the only animals that kill for fun are they? Dolphins, humans and elephants, amongst others, do too.

As for decimating the songbird population in Britain, I don't think cats, squirrels, and all the other bird predators we have are the reason for their decline. It's much more likely to be human related.

WinterBones · 09/04/2025 10:10

i have both dogs and cats.

cat shitting in your garden - annoying
barking dogs - annoying
car tinkering/exhaust fumes - annoying
dogs chasing cats - annoying
hot tub noise - nuetral
loud music - annoying

on balance, she is more annoying, but you were rude

verdict - you're both awful, do better.

Addictforanex · 09/04/2025 10:11

I get it OP. I’m pet free but have a similar cat neighbour (no hot tub or cars though) and in my own head I often yell at her and slam the door on her like this - as she does like a moan about every little thing but thinks all her cats using my garden as a toilet is absolutely fine. I have never actually done it though, I always grit my teeth and ignore.

We also have a neighbour with a dog that barks for up to an hour on end and that can put me on my last nerve.

I have cat deterrents up - that emit a high frequency noise. That helps a bit. And if I ever see them in my garden I shoo them away. Tempted by showering with a hose but never quick enough. My son’s allergic to cats. This “right to roam” shit should not include the personal residential property of others.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/04/2025 10:13

You’re as bad as each other.

I hope you weren’t serious about setting your dogs on her cats.

I8toys · 09/04/2025 10:14

You're all awful. However cruelty to animals - purposefully setting dogs to chase cats and barbed wire is psychotic.

You need to move to an island.

BobbleHatsRule · 09/04/2025 10:14

Cat shit is disgusting, filthy and infectious.

On the side of the dogs here

ItGhoul · 09/04/2025 10:15

Absolutely YANBU and if her cats carry on shitting your garden I would be inclined to start flipping your dogs' shit over her fence into hers.

DuskyPink1984 · 09/04/2025 10:15

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 09/04/2025 08:34

I feel like you all need to grow up.

Yep.

orangetree33 · 09/04/2025 10:15

The whole “team cat” “team dog” thing is a bit cringey. Why not “team don’t be a twat?”

I8toys · 09/04/2025 10:15

BobbleHatsRule · 09/04/2025 10:14

Cat shit is disgusting, filthy and infectious.

So is dog shit - too many dogs now and not enough people picking their shit up.

I am a dog and a cat lover in equal measure.

Explain? I have not embarrassed myself at all. Perhaps in your mind you think quoting the post is embarrassing? And the assumtions I am making are?
Presumably the casual sexism is ok in your world?

But Debbie is her actual name. It says a lot about you though that you assume the name Debbie is sexist. Only you know why you made that assumption.

DoddlesMcDoddle · 09/04/2025 10:17

Smallmercies · 09/04/2025 09:16

Any persistent barking is a nuisance, and wtf is it with your misogynistic use of Debbie? What's wrong with you?

Debbie is her real life name. Why do you assume the name Debbie is misogynistic? What is wrong you? My sister's name is Debbie. Shame on you for insulting the name.

BritishFoodFan · 09/04/2025 10:18

You sound nice.

DoddlesMcDoddle · 09/04/2025 10:19

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/04/2025 09:18

So you're happily outing 'Debbie' on a public forum.
Bet she'll be happy

Yeah because the name Debbie is so sooo unusual.... Instead being a very common name.

FinnalyCracked · 09/04/2025 10:19

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 09/04/2025 09:45

You all need to get in the hot tub together with a bottle of wine and hammer out a way forward in a spirit of mutual understanding and tolerance. Let's face it. Everyone is responsible for generating a portion of the aggro. Maybe neighbour C is more sinned upon than sinning though - and deserves a little more sympathy and an extra glass of wine.

Living in an isolated place with a handful of neighbours thrust upon you, rather than selected, is always going to be challenging. Things can get intense.

Is there any way for a communal vegetable patch to be organised? You could bond through working together on a shared project.

Her cats would probably shit all over the vegetable patch! 😂

FFs - I will not 'behave', stop being so patronising.
You would be happy with the sexism of calling women 'karen/debbie/whatever' etc?

FFS Why is the name Debbie sexist? What is wrong with you? It's just a NAME.

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 09/04/2025 10:21

DoddlesMcDoddle · 09/04/2025 10:19

Yeah because the name Debbie is so sooo unusual.... Instead being a very common name.

Well clearly the name is not unusual but we know a lot more about her than just her name don't we...
Lives in a barn conversion
has a hot tub
has a dh who likes lots of cars
has cats

Fairyliz · 09/04/2025 10:23

Goodness me (clutches pearls) this is not the behaviour I would expect from people who live in converted barns; what is the country coming to.😮

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 09/04/2025 10:23

You both need to learn to be neighbourly. Hate cat shit and barking dogs.

TammyJones · 09/04/2025 10:23

Chipsahoy · 09/04/2025 09:43

But they aren’t supposed to be indoor? That’s cruel. My cats are all barn cats. Lives might be shorter but they are living how they should live.

We had cats as kids
all out doors- they loved it.
when I fist heard of an indoor cat I was very confused… ours used to roam miles.

CoralOP · 09/04/2025 10:24

AlisounOfBath · 09/04/2025 10:03

You must be going nuts at dog owners then. The amount of dog shit everywhere in cities is revolting, and so are the little bags of shit dangling like a psychopath’s Xmas decorations from trees, or pushed thoughtfully into hedges.

🤷‍♀️ yeah I do go nuts at the scruffy people who leave dog shit around, it's disgusting. I would be even more annoyed if they did it in my own garden..not sure your point, do you think I would be applauding people who leave dog shit around...🤷‍♀️

GoldBeautifulHeart · 09/04/2025 10:25

Please dont set your dogs on the cats. It's not the cats fault they can have shit owners. You clearly don't like cats but what if one of your dogs injures the cats?

I've read on here before that investing in a motion sprinkler is a great way to keep cats from your garden. Just turn it off when the dogs go out.

Brefugee · 09/04/2025 10:25

what lowers the tone, is you screeching like a banshee.

I live in the country, there are cats everywhere, they belong to the farms. The only animal shit i get in my garden is from my fucking arse of a neighbours dog that can jump their fence. I just flick it back over - they have small kids, i don't care, they can pick it up if it bothers them.

The cats keep rats away so all good by me.

Hot tub noises are annoying - it would have been better just to ask that they restrict lateness and frequency? And in return keep your dog barking to an absolute minimum (and by that i mean none).
There are ways to keep cats out of your garden.

JudgeJ · 09/04/2025 10:25

MrTiddlesTheCat · 09/04/2025 07:48

Dogs barking is a statutory nuisance. Cats shitting isn't. You're the problem neighbour here.

We definitely need that Bollocks button! Cats hate being in the wrong place when you're watering your garden, just saying! Can't you return all the cats' debris to their owners?

DoddlesMcDoddle · 09/04/2025 10:26

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/04/2025 09:33

No, not ignoring this bit of info (altho not entirely sure that is her name - if it is, the OP has potentially outed her) - the OP had not mentioned her name was Debbie when I responded
The way the OP was written turned the 'Karen' into a 'Debbie' - which by the way, has been used in a derogatory way in a previous thread.
So, in case you're so tied up in having a go at me and cannot read clearly, my response was to the demonising of another woman's name, which was the implication before the OP 'explained' the neighbour was called Debbie...

The way the OP was written turned the 'Karen' into a 'Debbie'

No it wasn't, that is your insinuation.
