Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

I'm with you OP...hate the fact that people have cats and they go around crapping everywhere, but it's socially acceptable. Well I'd do everything in my power to deter them from my garden too.

As a non pet owner I hate having to remove poo from around my house.

Your dogs, your garden who cares if they're having a chat.

The council will care - it's a statutory noise nuisance

nomas · 09/04/2025 09:10

YANBU, she hasn’t a leg to stand on with her sex pond noise and shitting cats (and I adore cats and and I’m meh on dogs).

Definitely stop taking her parcels.

We only have Debbie’s word that it’s a nuisance.

There are lots of ways to deter them that don’t involve threatening physical harm to them. They are dumb animals they don’t know that they are doing anything wrong.

To answer a few questions:

Neighbour is actually called Debbie - it was not an insult. Her name is Debbie.

Dogs do not really bark, other than when they are playing together. So it's for a few minutes, perhaps twice a day. They don't bark if someone comes up the drive for example. Annoyingly, they were actually bought because their breed is known for being protective of their property and barking and, their lack of barking is a constant source of frustration to me. God knows what she'd do if I got a Dachshund, although...

As it is, my dogs don't shit in my garden - I have children and I think dog poo in a garden is disgusting. No excuse for it. So I REALLY object to picking up he cats poo. But I will be tossing it back over now.

Yes, I lost my rag. But I have put up with a lot from Debbie. SIX YEARS OF IT!!!! The cars are the real issue tbh - they stay there for weeks on end, with jacks under them (tyres missing) and are all barely road worthy. When you live in the middle of the countryside you do not want your nice, private, road/driveway congested with cars that should have been crushed years ago. But asking me to silence my dogs, who had already stopped playing by the time she stalked up my driveway, was the icing on the cake.

Edited

Are the cars shitting in your garden too? Or are they in fact just sitting there looking a bit ugly? So what?

I'm so glad I live in a busy place with cat shit and loud neighbours everywhere. Means they stay off my back and I get to see nice cats.

Namerchangee · 09/04/2025 09:09

Debbie? Is this the new Karen? You sound utterly bonkers. Cats have right to roam. Get a decent humane deterrent and live with it.

Also, cats are far superior to dogs.

Debbie is the name of the neighbour (if you read OP’s updates).

nomas · 09/04/2025 09:14

The neighbour’s name is Debbie.

And given Debbie has a loud sex pond, she can learn to live with (legal) noise herself.

Tessasanderson · 09/04/2025 09:15

Sheesh i read the first few comments and couldnt believe the muppetry going on here. I used to be a cat owner but some of the pro cat people are batshit crazy.

Did they not read the post. You let your dogs out for about 5 mins, you had been inside before that. In that 5 mins i expect excited dogs to make a little noise and believe me, that is not any noise issue for 5 mins. Its fucking life.

Then the cat owners try to justify their catshit as being lawful and noise being illegal. FFS. Then they have an issue with 'setting dogs on cats'. Are they living in a world where dogs dont chase cats? Its not a case of 'setting dogs' onto cats, you open the door and they will fucking chase the cat out of their garden. Thats the cats issue, not the OP.

OP you have done the right thing, bravo. Dont let your dogs be a nusiance as that isnt neighbourly, but absolutely tell this catshit neighbour she can kiss your arse if she thinks she can dictate to you when you can use your garden with your dogs.

100percenthagitude · 09/04/2025 09:15

Losing it like that, over something that's not the REAL problem, you've lost your power @FinnalyCracked

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/04/2025 09:16

nomas · 09/04/2025 09:09

Well, that was embarrassing for you. Making assumptions and quoting the OP’s post in the same first post.

Explain? I have not embarrassed myself at all. Perhaps in your mind you think quoting the post is embarrassing? And the assumtions I am making are?
Presumably the casual sexism is ok in your world?

Smallmercies · 09/04/2025 09:16

nomas · 09/04/2025 09:11

We only have Debbie’s word that it’s a nuisance.

Any persistent barking is a nuisance, and wtf is it with your misogynistic use of Debbie? What's wrong with you?

SirChenjins · 09/04/2025 09:17

Team dog here. Unless you're leaving them to bark for hours on end, of course.

Cat are pets for lazy people, and if I had my way I'd follow the Australian cat curfew laws. They shit where they shouldn't and they kill and maim birds and other wildlife. Nothing nice about cats.

Hopefully now you've told her what you think of the noise from her stupid hot tub and the mess the cars are making she'll think twice about complaining about the impact your dogs have on her peace.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/04/2025 09:17

Allthegoodhorses · 09/04/2025 09:08

Why on earth did you feel the need to quote the whole OP. You are the first person to answer.. 🧐😬 totally baffling!

OMG is the 'how to respond to a thread' police!

FinnalyCracked · 09/04/2025 09:17

JustMyView13 · 09/04/2025 09:09

I bet this felt so good to get off your chest 😂

So therapeutic. All the stress has left my body. I am zen. Inner-peace has been achieved.

So you're happily outing 'Debbie' on a public forum.
Bet she'll be happy

hockityponktas · 09/04/2025 09:19

Team dog here. It doesn’t sound like your dogs are constantly yapping?

cat shit is vile. And smelly and potentially dangerous.

having to shove someone else’s cat back out of your window because they like to visit you. I just want some fresh air, it’s not an invite.

Dog skidding around trying to get the cat out because it wants to share its food.

dog going crazy at night because neighbourhood cats are having a party outside our front door.

sitting on my doorstep or at my window meowing loudly to come in. You don’t live here.

leaving me presents on my front and back door step, baby bird anyone? De-capitated mouse?

and don’t get me started on the car tinkering. If it involves revving I’m done.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/04/2025 09:19

WhereYouLeftIt · 09/04/2025 08:39

Oh behave!

I often post a suggested response including a name, because that is how I would speak in real life. The names vary, depending on what names I've read most recently / heard on the news / TV programme I've watched / friend I've thought of.

Now wondering if your name is Debbie ...

FFs - I will not 'behave', stop being so patronising.
You would be happy with the sexism of calling women 'karen/debbie/whatever' etc?

converseandjeans · 09/04/2025 09:21

Cats hate the smell of citrus - when we lived in a terrace and started having this problem we put loads of cut up lemons around the edge of the garden, washed all the patio regularly with lemon scented disinfectant & it did eventually work. Cat wee & poo absolutely stinks so YANBU. The cats presumably have loads of open space to use as a toilet but they are going in your garden.

I agree that a hot tub and tinkering with cars on the drive are also a bit anti social. You should live in Germany. There’s rules about no noise at a weekend.

What’s wrong with you that you can’t read the OP’s posts? The neighbour’s ACTUAL name is Debbie.

And again, you have no idea if it’s persistent. The dogs had only been out for 5 mins when Debbie came traipsing over.

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/04/2025 09:22

JasmineAllen · 09/04/2025 09:22

My opinion:

  • Dogs barking continuously are very annoying
  • Hot tubs can make an annoying humming noise.
  • Cats pooing in your garden is annoying.
  • There is a special place in Hell for people who play loud music in their garden. However... Setting your dogs on a cat is reprehensible and if it was my cat I'd be reporting it to the police/RSPCA.

I recommend making sure the dogs get enough exercise and stimulation.
Spraying water at the cats each time you see them in your garden.

I have sympathy about living next door to someone with a hot tub who plays music in their garden because I'd hate that.
