Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

I'm on your side, OP. I felt vicarious enjoyment reading that. 😅

Let's hope you don't need them in an emergency.

Well done you. I have cats. They shit indoors. I spend a fortune on biodegradable cat litter and deodoriser and my house probably stinks but at least they’re not shitting in my neighbours’ gardens . I have spikes on my fence to deter other cats because they never shit in their own garden, do they . Letting your cat shit where it will is as bad as dog fouling. Both disgusting. Keep your pet shit where you can see it and if you don’t want to do that don’t have pets…

Team dog here. Cats are repulsive creatures. Thankfully no neighbours = no cats.

I could say the same about dogs!! How weird. You love one animal and hate another one. Not very rational is it?

ThisFluentBiscuit · 12/04/2025 19:14

FortyElephants · 09/04/2025 07:50

You said her cars lower the tone? Lost my sympathy there. Sounds like you both have annoying animals TBH.

Why? Rusty old shit-heap cars make neighbourhoods look dreadful. I would hate that too.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 12/04/2025 19:15

Haven't RTFT, but I've heard that orange peel is a deterrent for cats.

My parents' old close was Cat Central. My dad put up those boxes that emit a low sound that helps keep cats away. God knows why they went to the loo in the gardens, with miles of fields all around.

Skodacool · 12/04/2025 19:20

Charlize43 · 12/04/2025 19:06

I hate dogs barking.

I'd rather pick up a bit of cat shit (although they normally bury it) than listen to bleedin' dogs barking.

It’s even worse when it’s buried! Doing some planting and putting your hand in a surprise stinking lump.

Totally get it. Cats are aloof and so are their owners - fact. I judge people on my dog’s reaction to them / whether they have dogs and I’ve never been wrong.

Pissing myself laughing at that - "Cats are aloof and so are their owners"!! Bullshit or should I say catshit!! My cats never got that memo! In a lifetime of cat ownership I have never had an "aloof" cat, and I'm the most outgoing, chatty person going! What an idiotic statement!

Dogs love me too. I had one jump on me at the vet just yesterday. I don't have any because I've never had them. Didn't think it was fair when we were out at work all day and now we're used to having cats.

Before you come out with any more rubbish, my cats are bothering nobody because all three are indoors.

Just go away with the 'Debbie' shit. This is clearly the new 'Karen' insult that's taken off here.
Expected better from a predominantly female site.

HoneyRockH · 12/04/2025 19:27

Cat wrap is the worst, and neighbour A needs to take responsibility here, also there is no first world third world, as we are one world. Had the so called first world not enslaved, colonised etc one humanity and one world. But I think I would have spoken to neighbour A about the cats ages ago.

I have a dog and a dog flap (was there when I moved in). Rehomed dog end of September.

There are lots of cats nearby and, in the summer, if I leave windows or the back door open, cats just wander in and set up camp on my bed. I have an extreme cat allergy and have been hospitalised several times after being exposed to cat hair.

Dog happily bounces around the garden via dog flap. Doesn't bark unless she sees a cat. Now I have no more cats in the garden!

So, I'm team dog. But I'd be pissed off if it was barking all the time it was outside.

You have a rubbish dog for someone who has a cat allergy, it's letting cats into your house?! Get a dog with some balls!

WilfredsPies · 12/04/2025 19:33

FinnalyCracked · 12/04/2025 19:03

Sigh.

I first posted on Wednesday morning. It is now Saturday evening(ish).

There has been no cat shit in my garden since I did the rounds on Wednesday. I have not seen the cats since Wednesday. Neighbour B has also not seen the cats. Neighbour's garden is also cat shit free.

Conclusion? Telling Debbie to keep her cats off my lawn worked. Cats can be kept indoors - their owners just don't want them to.

Ultimately, I don't really care if you think I'm 'awful' or 'vile.' I don't have to pick up someone else's pet's shit in my garden, I don't have to worry about my kids stepping in cat shit when they go in the garden, I don't have my garden smelling like cat shit.

I got what I wanted, and I am happy 😉

Edited

I don’t think this is the last you’ve heard from Debbie. They’re outside cats. They’ll be climbing the walls trying to get out by now. I don’t know much about cats, so happy to be corrected, but I don’t think you can convert an outside cat into an indoors cat, unless the cat wants to be an indoors cat.

I suspect she’s gearing up for a complaint about how she’s too afraid to let her cats out because you and the other neighbour have threatened to set your dogs on them. I would be very cautious about what you’re heard to say, and who you say it too. You don’t want a neighbourhood dispute on your hands.

Also, you’re never going to get a balanced response. All the perfectly sensible dog people are going to agree with you and suggest that you electrify your fences, while the insane cat people will tell you that you’re the Devil incarnate, quote various cat laws and tell you how they’d go to prison if you hurt their animals. Personally, I think that you dislike cats and she dislikes dogs to the extent that you will never see each other’s point of view and both of you will think that the other is the more annoying. (Obviously she is more annoying).

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 12/04/2025 19:33

I don't understand all this shitting in people's gardens. My own three are indoors but next door neighbour has three and they're mostly out. Two of them spend a lot of time in our back garden. There are 7 or 8 cats that regularly frequent our back garden and I seldom find any shit???

Maybe they are trying to tell me something about my garden....!!!

Nobody can control where a cat with outdoor access decides to crap. The only way is to shut them in, and if a cat is used to being outdoors, it's cruel to then confine them.

Debbie is probably terrified you will harm her cats. I assume you love your dog? Well, Debbie loves her cats and they are allowed to roam wherever they desire.

As for setting the dogs on the cats - that's brutally cruel and terrifying for the cats. They're just another wee animal. I love animals, though I love cats best, but I would never be deliberately cruel to one. That's just disgusting.

Serendipity12 · 12/04/2025 19:35

Blimey. Everyone in this scenario sounds awful. I have cats and dogs. Cats are indoor (and madly affectionate btw) as I wouldn’t want them meeting people like op and some of the posters on here. Have you seen the problems human sewage is causing, btw??? Also have dogs who aren’t out unsupervised to bark in the garden as that’s just negligent and a blimming nuisance. If you live close to people in this overcrowded little island, you put up and (hopefully) shut up.

Thirteeneggs · 12/04/2025 19:37

Our thankfully ex NDN had a dog who somehow got into our garden and killed our cat. Said dog barked continually but was never at fault! New NDN s have three dogs a hot tub and George the cat who spends most of his time lounging in our garden. The dogs never bark unless someone they don't knows around! George tho has just been given DH leftover birthday salmon! Maybe it's a neighbour thing

You left out the perfectly sensible cat people.?!! Cats are gonna cat! Can you stop mice, rats, foxes, birds, etc from shitting in your garden? Have you ever seen what comes out of a seagull's arse???

Maybe Debbie's cats need a change of diet? None of mine do messy poos, and the small firm nuggets are easy enough to get rid of.

Your poor cat. I'm so sorry. I would absolutely lose my shit with that devil dog's owner!

everhopeful22 · 12/04/2025 19:40

I can see this from both sides, having dogs and a cat although I don't have a hot tub sadly.

I have so many holes in my tongue trying not to loose it with my neighbour whose 3 year old screams incessantly, in what appears to be temper tantrums, day and night and is never told to stop . Laughter and play is a lovely sound but screaming and kicking really winds me up . And before anyone says "that's children for you" I never allowed mine to disturb the peace .
Consideration for others seems like a thing of the past sadly.

Newyorklady · 12/04/2025 19:42

Cats aren’t shit in gardens. They usually bury their shit so to speak and are extremely clean animals.
On the other hand barking dogs can be very annoying.
