Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

Well it hasn't stopped the cats up until now, so it sounds like hot tub Debs and old Tom Farmer there have taken heed and keep their cats away from their neighbour's property. Excellent result.

DorothyStorm · 10/04/2025 08:57

My cat used to let herself into a neighbour’s house through an open window above a one storey extension and sit on the windowsill of the front bedroom looking out at the world. That is cheek. Going in a garden is frustrating but not the cats fault. Settling dogs on them is cruel and well, sadistic.

As it is, dogs were out on the patio all day yesterday until gone 8pm and I worked at my study (overlooking garden, by patio doors)…guess what, no cats. Usually they’re in and out all day. Not a peep yesterday.

I guess cats can be stopped from going into peoples gardens and shitting all over them, you just have to try. No cat shit in my garden this morning either.

I was feeling a touch guilty about finally snapping, but now I’m glad I did since clearly all Debbie needed was someone bring crystal clear with her in order for her to get a grip.

Long may it continue!

It was obviously the dogs presence in the garden that kept them out

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 10/04/2025 09:28

To those posters saying its what cats do and what do they want the neighbour to do about it, well cleaning up her own cats shit would be start and to the poster who asked why can't the OP just clean it whats one extra turd, why the hell should the OP clean up shit that doesn't belong to her pets?

It's a massive cop-out, really.

You could just as well say that pooping themselves 'is just what babies and toddlers do; what can I do about it?', but if you let them loose naked in the fruit and veg aisle at Sainsbury's - unwatched and uncleaned-up-after - and looked on and smiled lovingly as they befouled the floor, I don't think people would be quite so understanding.

There's absolutely nothing stopping cat owners from cleaning up their pet's turds when alerted to them or by going to their regular haunts. They could even attach a tiny camera to its collar to help them discover everywhere it had done a poo. They just don't want to and think that legitimately just makes it somebody else's problem.

“I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off…”

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is the rant I feel I needed to see today.
There’s evidently many ‘cat people’ on here. Whether it’s legal or not cat shit in your garden is disgusting, even worse if you have littles. Save yourself the hassle of the cat shit and get a water pistol (read supersoaker). The kids can play with it too.

JasmineAllen · 09/04/2025 09:38

I'm not talking about waterboarding them, just a gentle squirt from a hose or water pistol. Isn't it what the rspca recommend?

I don't agree with it at all. It's not necessary. I know this isn't you but just to highlight if ANYONE even threatened my pets with their dogs, it would be the last thing they'd ever do. I'd be at the police and the media before their dog had set foot outside of their house.

Stop your cats being a nuisance and no one needs to spray them with water.

Last thing you’ll ever do 🤣

You cannot STOP a cat being a 'nuisance'. The water spraying is just a typically ridiculous stupid human reaction to anything that they don't understand. I'd certainly spray anyone with water who did that to mine. Without hesitation.

Onleemoi · 10/04/2025 10:06

How can you say spraying something with water is just a typically ridiculous stupid human reaction to anything that they don't understand why simultaneously saying you’d spray someone with water if they did something you didn’t like?

Revenge. You come near my cats - revenge.

You can. Most cat owners are just unwilling to do so.

Yeah. I can just imagine it. 9 o'clock news headline: owner lets dog into garden and dog chases cat out of the garden. Video of cat sitting on shed in its own garden, licking its paws and dog wandering around sniffing in its own garden.

Followed by the headline of cat owner arrested for wasting police time.

Wow, all us dog owners are quaking in our boots. You are going to tell the police and go on media.

What ya gonna say? My cat was in the garden and a dog chased it. How mean....

It would just go like this thread. Half the batshits would be up in arms but who really cares about them. The other half will laugh at you. Let me know how it goes telling the police. They cant even stop people walking into shops and stealing, do you think they are going to get involved in a dog chasing your cat?

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 10/04/2025 11:55

I see the neighbour and someone called Debbie irl have posted already 🤣🤣🤣

Blabla81 · 10/04/2025 12:25

All I can visualise is Hairy Maclary and Scarface Claw when reading this. Poor neighbour D 😆

I8toys · 10/04/2025 12:27

I wonder how the dog owners would feel if anyone suggested we hurt their animals because of barking or being a nuisance. Set another animal on it, poison it, squirt things at it, put things in their way that would hurt it. Lock it in the house all day with no access to the outside. You wouldn't like that to happen to your beloved pet would you but its okay for cats.

If a dog or dogs came into my garden and chased my pets (I have a small dog now but have also had guinea pigs and rabbits), killed wildlife or shat in my flower beds or on the lawn then I'd do the same (apart from the poisoning obvs). I couldn't guarantee my own dog wouldn't attack it if he felt threatened either.

Absolutely nobody has suggested any of that other than the squirting. Yes, I know the phrase "set the dog on it" was used but it's quite clear that just means let the dog chase it.

Feel free to chase my dog away or to squirt her with water if she turns up in your garden. But she won't, because unlike most cat owners on here, I'm a considerate dog owner.
