Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

How do you “set” a dog on anything unless it’s a highly trained police/ army dog?

If it naturally chases a cat when it’s in its own garden isn’t that just natural behavior? I don’t see anything wrong with this - cat will learn to go elsewhere unless it wants chased.

Team dog here. Cats are repulsive creatures. Thankfully no neighbours = no cats.

How so? They smell nice and repel vermin, really not do disgusting!

Sigh. My dogs don't bark - that's the whole point! I WISH they did.

Separately, definitely not chavvy 😉

A German shepherd is quite chavy. A bit retro 1980s chavvy, but chavvy none the less.

Not the sort of dog I'd expect someone to have who objects to do-up cars on the drive lowering the tone. I'd expect the person with do-up cars on drives to have the German Shepherd tbh.

I would love to hear this story from the side of the cat neighbour.

They have a neighbour who sets her dogs on the cats, and actually enjoys watching the terrifed animals flee.

She knocks on another neighbours door to politely ask that she bring their dogs in, as they're causing a nuisance. But gets verbally attacked, sworn at, her cats are threatend and then a door slammed in her face.

The cat shit is annoying, but it really doesn't sound like she's the problem neighbour here.

Yup. I agree !! Sounds like 6 of one and half a dozen of the other! In fact OP does sound the worst, for not having a calm adult discussion, but ranting, and slamming the door in the neighbour's face!

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 09/04/2025 08:22

It was most likely fox shit op can't tell the difference

Fox shit is the absolute worst, stinks. Far worse than cat shit.

CurlewKate · 09/04/2025 13:44

Love the idea of cats sitting on the garage and hissing at you. You must have been terrified.

Karmakamelion · 09/04/2025 13:45

We dint have a right over the world as humans. Cats and dogs have as much right on the earth and tbh both of you need to chill

Icanhearabee · 09/04/2025 13:14

I don’t agree at all. I would much rather have dogs barking than other peoples cats using my garden as a toilet. I used to have to pick up huge piles of cat shit off my garden in my old house because they liked to shit on the garden and in the plant borders. We grew tomatoes in raised beds at one stage and the neighbours cats used to shit in those as well 🤢

Why would you do that? It's fertiliser.

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 09/04/2025 13:50

Obviously not the point of the post (and I'm 100% with you btw), but please would you post a picture of your dogs? I LOVE GSDs. Sadly can't have dogs at the moment, but they're priority number one when we move.

TeeBee · 09/04/2025 13:52

HedgehogOnTheBike · 09/04/2025 08:05

Get lion poo from zoo/ safari park. Bury in your borders. Also piss on your fences. If you see cats spray them with hose. Light drizzle not blowing them across the garden!

If you let your dogs out after work take them for a long walk, does the dogs more good then running around the garden barking.

You can buy it from B&Q now...well, lion poo pellets at least. Seems to keep (annoying bastard) cats off my raised beds.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 09/04/2025 07:48

Dogs barking is a statutory nuisance. Cats shitting isn't. You're the problem neighbour here.

My thoughts exactly! I can't abide barking dogs.

Superhansrantowindsor · 09/04/2025 14:01

You are both in the wrong but you are also wrong for losing your temper. You have to live next to each other so should try harder to compromise.

aphroditeflighty · 09/04/2025 12:47

A cat can clamber over a 6ft fence, so good luck getting planning permission for an 8 ft one.

It's the type of fence or the topper you put on top it that prevents escape, not the height.

Noodles1234 · 09/04/2025 14:07

I don’t have pets, but one neighbour has a yappy dog and the other a cat.

everyday I’d take the cat in my garden with a possible poop than the yappy dog that sends me crazy.

DoddlesMcDoddle · 09/04/2025 13:12

No, barbed wired tears your skin/organs apart. It's why prisons are surrounded with barbed wire. Google what barbed wire looks like.

I suppose it might depend on the type? There's barbed wire on many of the farms round here - not razor wire.

TeenLifeMum · 09/04/2025 13:02

Not clicking the link because I can’t find the energy to care. Animals poop and cats are roaming. You are welcome to hate it but that doesn’t mean others have to change their behaviour.

No, it doesn't mean they have to change their behaviour. But any form of decent human being would do what they could to prevent a health risk and a nuisance to their neighbours that they are causing by owning a cat.

Just go away with the 'Debbie' shit. This is clearly the new 'Karen' insult that's taken off here.
Expected better from a predominantly female site.

Might I politely ask that you go away with the ‘quoting an OP’ shit.

StartAnew · 09/04/2025 14:09

I'd be very surprised if the cats are still using a garden where they have been chased by dogs. Their owner might be able to encourage them to use her garden by creating the kind of space that says 'toilet' to them. Have you asked her to do this? Have you considered the poo might be from other animals?
Dogs barking can be very loud and stressful so it would be good if you could all find ways to compromise.

Isthiswhatmenthink · 09/04/2025 14:10

Bloody love triggered cat obsessives 🤭

juicylipbalm · 09/04/2025 14:11

They're filthy creatures and they stink, as do the homes of their owners.

I asked my neighbour to do that when his cats were constantly shitting in our garden and we had young dc.

His answer? You can't control cats so no point in trying.

He could at least have tried it. Now that we have dogs, I have no problem with them chasing his cats out of the garden.

You can't control cats but you can set things up so they are more likely to use their own garden. They like a nice patch of well-turned soil; also things like bark which turn over nicely.
Your dogs have the right to be in their own garden and if they chase visiting cats that is fair enough (so long as they don't injure them). Cats normally avoid gardens where this has happened, so hopefully you don't have the problem any more.

This. I'd do time for you.

The police? What in the law and order do you think the police will do. They don't even turn up to theft of cars

bloody police for threatening a dog on your cats 😂😂😂😂😂

Auchencar · 09/04/2025 14:18

These barn conversion communes so often end with neighbour fall outs.
