How do I get the tube in London?

sunshineandstarsgirl · 09/04/2025 00:10

My family friend lives nearly 90 minutes from London. I want to visit her this month. I live near Manchester. I need to catch a tube from London Euston to London St Pancras International. And then a train to her place. To be honest, I have no idea what a tube is. How do I catch a tube from London Euston to London St Pancras International? I haven't travelled much in my life.
I will be going alone on this trip.

It would honestly be easier to walk. It’s about 10 -15 minutes straight along the road.

ThatLemonPanda · 09/04/2025 00:15

will you have lots of bags ? it’s only 10 min walk

So you are saying I can walk from London Euston to London St Pancras International?

Yep, unless you will have too much luggage to carry, walking will be easier.

FanofLeaves · 09/04/2025 00:15

It’s a ten min walk. By the time you’ve gone down to the tube you could be halfway there.

its not hard to take the tube though.

Darkclothes · 09/04/2025 00:15

I too was going to say you can walk it. I'd say its less than 10mins.

Growuppeople · 09/04/2025 00:15

I’m confused? It’s a train and you get on it in the direction you would like to go?

ClementsR2024 · 09/04/2025 00:16

Walk it - by the time you get down to the platform and back up again the walk would have been easier. Enjoy seeing your friend.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will have 1 suitcase and 1 handbag.

It is 0.4 miles and an 8 minute walk.

London Euston and St Pancras aren't very far apart it only takes 10 minutes to walk between them. And the walk is very easy - out of Euston onto the euston road, turn left and walk along the main road, past the British library until you reach St pancras (which is also on the euston road).

If you do want to get the tube (which is a synonym for underground and all the signage says underground) you need to go down into the underground from the euston concourse and head for the victoria line eastbound. It's only one stop.

You can use your contactless bank card (or apple/ android pay) to let you in/ out of the barriers - it's cheaper than a paper ticket.

The northern line also goes between the two but it can be fairly confusing so I'd suggest using the victoria line.

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 09/04/2025 00:18

I would walk, it's less than 10 minutes.

Otherwise, from Euston you need to take the Northern line one stop to Kings Cross St Pancreas.

It's all well signposted.

If you've bought an advance ticket for the whole journey then that will cover the tube part. If not, just tap your debit card on the gates at both stations.

Try to avoid rush hour as the trains will be packed.

But walking through the stations, waiting for the tube, catching the tube will likely take longer than just walking.

You don't. As everyone else has said, you walk. It will be quicker than getting the Tube (which is the Underground).

blueshoes · 09/04/2025 00:19

Use Google Maps to find out the walking route and roads and time it takes to walk there.

The Citymapper app is good for getting around London. It gives all the different options of walking and public transport to get from A to B.

Mistunza · 09/04/2025 00:20

You pass the British Library on the way! Enjoy.

Euston to St Pancras is easier to walk. Go out the front of Euston, turn left and walk along Euston Road, past the British Library, and you'll soon be at St Pancras same side of the road. You have to cross three or four side toads, but that's it.

But if you did want to get a tube - It's the underground railway. It's well-signposted at major stations, and there are maps on the wall. Euston to St P is one or two stops on the Northern line (black).on the King's Cross branch, (not the Charing Cross branch.)

If you've got a cross-London train ticket, use thst to ho through the barriers. Otherwise, you can pay with a contact less bank card - just zap your card at the barriers when you enter and exit.

nappingthroughjan · 09/04/2025 00:21

I agree with PP it is v easy to walk from Euston to St Pancras as it is a straight road and c10mins.

However if you do want to get the tube (underground train) then you will need to take the Northern Line, Bank branch southbound from Euston to St Pancras. It’s one stop. To get to the underground follow the signs (you come out of Euston station and turn right and the entrance is right there), go down the escalators and there are ticket barriers, the best way is to pay contactless (with any debit or credit card) - you ‘tap in’ with your card and the gate opens. Follow the signs for the Northern Line (indicated by a black line), make sure you follow the ‘Bank Branch’ and ‘Southbound’. The trains are v frequent (every few mins), it’s one stop and then you’re at St Pancras. Follow the signs out for St Pancras with the national rail symbol. At the ticket barriers ‘tap out’ with the same card you ‘tapped in’ with. And you’re done.

I would walk though - easier, less stressful if you’re not used to the tube and free!

You pass the British Library on the way!

I always cut across the BL courtyard and go up Midland Road to the St P entrance up there.

MumOnBus · 09/04/2025 00:31

AIBU to think OP should have gone to Google Maps rather than Mumsnet fot this?

HonoriaBulstrode · 09/04/2025 00:35

OP, St Pancras is really four stations in one, with four different sets of platforms - East Midlands, Thameslink, Southeastern and Eurostar. I assume you don't want Eurostar, but you will need to know which of the others you want.

She hasn’t done it before , no need to be confused.

Thank you. My family friend lives in Ashford, so I think it is Southeastern? 😊
