Starting college with no gcses?

For various reasons we have HE our youngest via an online school. They are currently repeating y10 with i thought the view to do gcses next year aged 17.
They have now informed me that they want to go to college in September. Apparently they can do gcses at college.
It's currently Easter holidays so I don't know how much info I can get from the college but will need to remove them from their online school asap. I don't want to pay for September fees.
Does anyone know if colleges do gcses ?

Around here they only do maths and english GCSE at college. That's both the sixth form one and vocational college.

How is anyone going to be able to answer that other than the specific colleges you are considering? But 6th form colleges will generally do a levels so you're realistically looking for an out of year school place in y10 in September to start GCSEs, unless you find somewhere unusual.

Yes they do, some colleges run courses for home education 14-16 year olds. The only way you'll be able to find out the details and whether they have any spaces would be to ring the different colleges or email their admissions (email address is normally on their websites)

You’ll need to check the website of whatever college you’re looking at. Some will offer just Maths and English resits, others might offer a few others. However, I doubt you’ll find a college with the full range of subjects so the subjects your dc is currently doing may not be offered. There may also be syllabus changes from what they’re currently doing - different books in English for example.

It depends what they want to study. We’re looking at 16+ education at college for level 3 (Alevel equivalent) courses and they need 5 GCSEs at 5+ including English and Maths. There are level 1 and 2 courses available alongside resitting English and Maths GCSE or functional skills for those without qualifications. If your son is capable of doing well at GCSE he’d have more options having taken them.

They are thinking of catering and hospitality. So happy to do English maths and I think they can do science as well.
They have friends at college who failed everything and some who didn't even turn up for the exam. My dd has a friends at college who is doing her 3rd time at maths

Some colleges offer a set of five or so "catch-up" GCSEs to be done over a year. There isn't usually much choice of subjects, but it would set your child up for entry to another college course the following year. All colleges will offer English and maths at least. As you probably know, all 16-18 year olds at college who don't already have English and maths must study toward those alongside whatever other course they are doing; it's a government funding requirement.

If the info isn't available online on the college's prospectus and you are in a great hurry to find out, you could ask on your local home ed group. People tend to know about these opportunities.

We have a UTC near us that has a year 10/11 cohort. They do offer a range of GCSEs and other level 2 courses. Other colleges in our city are more traditional FE colleges and only offer maths/ English GCSE - usually children resitting. You really need to check the websites or ring colleges near you to see what is offered.
