Easter eggs

My mum has decided to stop buying Easter eggs for the grandchildren this year as she feels they are too old for them. They are teenagers. My children are upset by this and don’t feel too old!!! At what age do other grandparents generally stop this?

No one is too old for Easter eggs but no one should be upset about not being given one. They’re not in the same category as Christmas or birthday presents.

My DD hasn’t expected her GP’s to give her an egg ever. Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn’t.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 08/04/2025 19:17

I don’t remember ever being given Easter eggs by grandparents. My parents bought them for me, and still do now that I’m an adult, so no I don’t think teenagers are too old.

londongirl12 · 08/04/2025 19:24

To be fair, the cost of them will probably stop people buying them.

my nan always got me an egg. I’ve bought one for my dad. Chocolate has no age limit 🤤

Can't you just get them one? PIL buy ours eggs so we don't double-up. If they stopped we would buy them.

Aligirlbear · 08/04/2025 19:35

My parents still buy their 3 grandchildren Easter eggs and the youngest is 25 , the eldest 35 !

IllBeFrankYouBeBob · 08/04/2025 19:40

Mine have never got eggs from their GPs :-(

WilfredsPies · 08/04/2025 20:00

Maybe she’s feeling the pinch and can’t afford it? Or if she’s still working and got bundles of cash falling out of every cupboard, maybe she’s worried about future expenses once she retires, like potential care fees, and just doesn’t want to spend the money on teens who are clearly too old to believe in the Easter Bunny anymore.

My children are upset by this and don’t feel too old!!! I bet they don’t! Do they buy eggs for her? Or do they think she’s too old to enjoy a bit of egg shaped chocolate?

Oneearringlost · 08/04/2025 20:04

Ohh, I don't have grandchildren yet, but I buy all three of my adult children and their partners Easter eggs and also send one to my 95 year old mother. No one is too old for an Easter egg!

KittenPause · 08/04/2025 20:08

mine are still teens so DGP still buying them Easter eggs. They still buy me an Easter egg and I’m in my 50’s and I still buy them one each in their 80’s. That’s because we see each other at Easter so it would feel weird not to give each other Easter eggs.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 08/04/2025 21:00

My mum always got dds and me an Easter egg, even advent calendars at Christmas. It stopped when she died in 2022. Definitely miss the gesture. You’re never too old.

NeverTookTheTime · 08/04/2025 21:13

My partners parents stopped buying Easter eggs when my youngest was only about 7. All their other grandchildren were older so she just got forgotten by them.

We still buy our children lots of Easter eggs even now they’re older. We also buy our nieces and nephews and friends kids an egg even though they’re mostly teens and older now.

GettingMySpringOn · 08/04/2025 21:18

Grandparents still buy our kids all ranging from primary age to adults. Our kids get a ridiculous amount. Last year 18 eggs each! Inlaws got them 4 large each!.
My parents still buy for us and siblings too.
Never too old for an egg. But also if they stopped buying for us or the older teens / adults I wouldn't moan about it

Daisy12Maisie · 08/04/2025 21:19

My mum has got me one this year. Im 43. she always gets one for all her grown up children and for her grandchildren who are 22 - 3 years old.
I don’t actually bother to get them for my children. Easter is a weird time for us due to a bereavement that was at Easter so I don’t ever make a big deal of it.

GettingMySpringOn · 08/04/2025 21:21

My own Nan also got her own children. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren. ( she had 10 of her own kids all partnered / married) every couple had between 1 and 4 kids. And 5 of the grandkids had 2 or 3 kids each.
I remember her sending me to Asda to get the eggs. She said get 42 that's enough. It wasn't. ! She loved doing it.

TheCurious0range · 08/04/2025 21:23

We've asked wider family not to, I've thrown away 2.5 Easter eggs recently (they'd gone white) and he only got 4 last year and we used some of it baking. We do an Easter egg hunt with some little chocolate bits, but also some stickers, a new rubber, some paint your own egg cups I found in Aldi.
My parents and PIL will usually give a book or similar.

IWanderedLonely · 08/04/2025 21:27

I've never bought my grandchildren Easter eggs (nothing against Easter, just think they're a rip-off). When they were tiny I bought them a new outfit, now I give them money - if the want to buy chocolate they'll get more for their money Wink

Lots of them work out about the same value as other chocolate per 100g, often better value as there are so many offers on Easter eggs.

Solaire18381 · 08/04/2025 22:40

I'm not a grandparent but I stop buying nieces and nephews Easter Eggs when they're 18.

TryForSpring · 08/04/2025 23:07

As an aunt I'm still buying for 19- and 22-year-olds. If I got the impression they weren't bothered, then I'd stop.

Yep The Lindt ones that were £15 are now £20

My DM stopped buying me Easter eggs when i was about 13 but got me a box of Dairy Box instead (this was back in the 80s when they were nice

I would feel grateful. Everyone and their dog buys our kids Easter eggs. More than they could, (or I would let them), ever eat. I got 1 maybe 2 as a kid, which is more than enough. This ridiculous situation where my kids are getting an egg from every family or friend is just insane. Not to mention the baskets with Easter toys and other consumer society inspired junk. Nobody needs that much sugar, let alone my children. Sorry it’s a sore point that I didn’t realise was so triggering
