A works-for-anyone present idea which I can get today...

My 13yo is going out this eve with a friend and friends mum. Just discovered it is the mums bday. Don't know them well (friends from secondary school so no socialising at gates or what not), have met once before when we took boys to an activity together.

What could I get as a small present for her - chocs too boring? Wine assumes she drinks. Flowers a bit odd. Nice hand cream? I work near a major rail station so have the usual railway shops around that and can grab on lunch hour

Ideas please?

House plant, not cut flowers. Something in a pot like a succulent. Under a tenner and will last years.

Everything0Everywhere · 08/04/2025 10:03

If you don't know her well, chocolates or plant are ideal.

FictionalCharacter · 08/04/2025 10:05

I’d go for the nice hand cream, maybe one of those sets of 3 travel sized ones from a good brand.
I don’t like being given houseplants personally. I don’t usually like the ones people choose, plus I already have enough!

Hand cream or diffuser

BobbyBiscuits · 08/04/2025 10:09

Potted plant or cut flowers, or bottle of prosecco. Even if she doesn't drink she can use it at her party?

SheilaFentiman · 08/04/2025 10:09

Nice hand cream
A mug
Nice biscuits

loropianalover · 08/04/2025 10:10

Nothing boring about a nice box of chocs, nicely wrapped.

SheilaFentiman · 08/04/2025 10:11

And I would rather have flowers than a plant that lasts years. Anything in my house for years should be something that I, or someone who knows me well, has actively chosen.

Shetlands · 08/04/2025 10:11

A bunch of tulips, hyacinths or white, scented narcissi.

Needmorelego · 08/04/2025 10:12

Chocolate is probably best.
Unless there's allergies they will be eaten - especially if there's teenagers involved.
I certainly wouldn't be impressed with hand cream, wine or a plant (I'd smile politely but wouldn't really want them).

Happyinarcon · 08/04/2025 10:13

Some posh drinking chocolate or some posh coffee bags. Any food stuff that is overly expensive and nicely packaged

Exitpursuedbygeese · 08/04/2025 10:14

Bunch of daffodils, potted hyacinths, posh handwash always gets used, chocolates are great as they’ll be eaten even if not by recipient by kids ir gifted on.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/04/2025 10:14

Yes a bunch of really cheery spring flowers.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 08/04/2025 10:14

I’d go for smellies or something. If you’re near a boots have a look at their gift sets? Maybe. soap and Glory mini set or Nivea lip balm sets

SpringIsSpringing25 · 08/04/2025 10:16

Out all the things that have been suggesting the only thing that would spark any joy, for me, would be some fresh flowers.

Fushia123 · 08/04/2025 10:21

When I want a small gift as a token, I go to the local florist, choose a few lovely blooms and greenery and they wrap them nicely in brown paper with a ribbon. I tell them how much I want to pay ….£7, £10 etc and they sort it. It helps to support a local business and the small gift is always well received.
