I quit vaping 30 minutes ago - help me get through it

Was a smoker for 5 years and quit to vape 8 years ago. Vaper ever since. Tried quitting twice before. I've been slowly running out of vape juice the last couple of days but couldn't be bothered to get more. Got to the point where I was rummaging through old bags to try and find vape juice and realised how sad it was my vape controlled me in this way. So chucked it in the bin. Longest I've lasted is 3 days. I go to Krakow Friday with my mum (who's a smoker) so really hoping I can stay on track.

anyone successfully managed to quit?

You can’t buy the flavoured vapes in the EU, maybe this will help a bit if you can’t even buy them. Well done for giving it another go, hopefully for good this time.

CalicoPusscat · 08/04/2025 07:44

Good luck with it @walliceandme

Yes you can! I've seen them for sale in Ireland, Germany and Austria over the last few months.

Ohmych · 08/04/2025 07:48

Good luck with it. I've been vaping since I gave up smoking over 10 years ago.

Doggymummar · 08/04/2025 07:49

I went to Singapore where vaping is illegal. Stopped dead after ten years. Had no issues at all. You can do it.

I went to three EE countries last month and they weren’t, maybe it’s not widespread then.

Aim to get to day 4 - you'll then be over the physical nicotine addiction/withdrawal. Then it's about the psychological addiction - which arguably is harder.

When I gave up smoking many years ago now, I read the Alan Carr (not the comedian!) Easy Way book. It really helped me, but two things stuck with me - firstly withdrawal from nicotine is really not that significant - it mild discomfort and cravings will pass quickly, so you only need to really ramp up your willpower for a few minutes before it passes. Secondly, there was a time that your body had no need for nicotine. That is your body's normal state and that still applies now. All you are doing is getting your body back to it's normal state. Not sure if this makes much sense but I hope it helps.

Oh and one other tip that helped me, but not sure if it works for vaping in the same way, was to tell yourself "I won't have this cigarette, but I can have the next one". Then next time a craving happens tell yourself the same thing.

Good luck OP - you'll feel so free not to be a slave to it!!

SauvignonBlonk · 08/04/2025 08:14

Go for it OP!!!!!
You'll be so proud of yourself when you achieve giving up!

walliceandme · 08/04/2025 09:00

Thank you so much all! I've officially been vape free for 10 hours! The struggle is but isn't real, I can't explain it. I'm not itching the walls yet but that's because I've spent majority of it asleep. I'm drinking coffee to help ease the craving.

I went cold turkey. Aim to get to 24 hours and you’ll feel great for doing it.
By day 5 I wasn’t even phased and never went back to vaping.

Workoutrage · 08/04/2025 09:02

Once you get through this and you will if you really want to, you’ll be so free! No more a slave to nicotine l. Well done OP - it’s so worth it.

walliceandme · 08/04/2025 09:05

you are all making me so excited to be free from it 🫠. The sad thing is, I do enjoy it! It's one of life's guilty pleasures I've actually enjoyed but realised it's unattainable looks gross, and affects my
health. I'm absolutely dreading my first drop of alcohol

Well done op, keep going. DS told me he ran out of liquid on Friday and hasn’t vaped since. He wants to go with me today to buy some. I think it’s awesome that he has managed 4 days without and think he should keep it up, but he doesn’t want to stop. I wish he would - no one knows the impact on health yet

Radiatorvalves · 08/04/2025 09:37

Hang in there OP… have a coffee/tea/wTer or a walk… whatever distracts you. Well done for stopping.

TheFluffiestCat · 08/04/2025 09:41

I’m 12 days in using EasyWay. The audiobook worked for me where reading it didn’t. I’ve been telling myself that going back to it would be like calling my ex. I don’t want it back, I was embarrassed to be seen with it, my friends and family hated it, and now I’m free! It was horrible to realise how much I obsess over it, but I think I’m getting better. Very best of luck!

BrieCamera · 08/04/2025 09:42

I stopped after 12 years in January. It got better after day 3 when the physical withdrawals wore off (head aches, irritability). After that it was just a waiting game until my brain clicked on that I don’t vape anymore - the more I got through my usual vaping times without actually having it the more my brain started to learn that I don’t need it so it stopped putting the idea in my head. For the first month I thought about it daily. After that it got less and less to the point I don’t think about it anymore - in fact I went to a wedding recently and was drinking with vapers/smokers and wasn’t even tempted!! You WILL get to that point I promise you - it’s worth all the shit at the beginning. Positives and negatives for me:

Positives

  • more money
  • less stress of having to keep on track of am I running out of juice etc
  • dont have to carry about vape, spare battery, spare juice etc and make sure it’s charged - just need my phone
  • my lungs feel sooo much better and healthier
  • im definitely fitter so my lungs must have recovered a bit
  • less anxiety - I’m not having to go out and be thinking of where can I next fit going out for a vape in - I’m literally free now
  • i honestly feel so proud of myself managing to quit when I never thought I could - to the point I’ve also lost 11lbs because I’ve realised I must actually have some willpower!

Negatives

  • very occasionally I’ll miss the ‘hit’ - but I normally have a mega strong coffee to get a similar feeling that way

Honestly you can do this - I mean you’ve already done it really just keep it up it’s only going to get easier.

SauvignonBlonk · 08/04/2025 10:59

Keep going OP!!!
You can do it!

LoveMySushi · 08/04/2025 11:05

I quit smoking 10 years ago the first time after 8ish years of smoking. Was smoke free for like 4 years and sadly started again when my kids were very little. I didnt want anyone to know, so everytime after smoking i would shower and brush my teeth etc. It was such abhassle, that after all of it i was so stressed i needed another smoke.
At one point i realised how pathetic this whole cycle is, so after 2 years of that hassle i quit for the second time. Cold turkey, no excuses. Its been 5ish years now and i feel better than ever! But cravings still come and go sometimes.. i know if i had just one, i would fall off the wagon again.

My best tip is just take it one step at a time. Every time you make a conscious decision not to buy a vape is a win! And just keep winning!

OneQuirkyPanda · 08/04/2025 11:05

I quit after years of vaping, not gonna lie it was very hard as I was a heavy vaper. I survived by vaping nicotine free juice for the first two weeks then stopping completely, what helped me was mints and very cold water through a straw, gave me the throat hit I missed. I’ve not vaped since last May.

walliceandme · 08/04/2025 11:14

Thank you for all your experiences and support. I keep going back and fourth in my brain, thinking oh I actually don't feel I need it, to suddenly such an intense urge to pick it up out of the bin! But I'm not being swayed. I'm having a coffee every other hour, and mint humbugs to keep my mouth occupied.
What I'm struggling with more is being bored and having nothing to do, that's when I would vape.

Make sure you dont swap it with snacking! First time i quit i startet eating a lot of snacks to keep busy.. big mistake! Stick to gum, water etc.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 08/04/2025 13:54

Willing you on OP.. I’ve vaped for 6 years after quitting smoking and now being controlled by that instead.
There’s a natural end to a cigarette whereas a vape there isn’t, which makes it much harder.
Hang on in there.

Ohmych · 08/04/2025 20:45

Try and keep your hands busy so they're not empty looking for something to pick up. Colouring or something

Ahsheeit · 08/04/2025 21:11

A nicorette inhilator may help here! I couldn't vape as COVID gave me asthma. Vape was worse for my breathing than tobacco. The inhilator gives you that throat hit, no vape, no liquid, and you can use it anywhere. Mine's more a chew toy now 😉
