Is anyone mouth-taping?!

I'm a terrible snorer and feel like I should try it to see if it makes a difference.

Does taping work for Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

@2dogsandabudgie

I would no doubt have a nightmare that someone has their hand over my mouth!

Vomiting and choking is a real possibility

How? As a pp said, when was the last time you vomited or choked in your sleep, out of the blue, without waking?

In any case, most people use a tiny strip of tape placed across the centre of the mouth which comes off very, very easily.

I mean, this is surely a case of if you don't fancy it, don't do it! It's hardly mandatory.

Shamelessly placemarking to see how you get on! I struggle to breathe through my nose in the day, i just don't feel like i get enough air into my lungs (i suspect a deviated septum, but as it doesn't cause me any other significant problems I doubt the NHS will touch me) so I don't think it would be good for me to try it, but I'm so interested to hear experiences.

Does taping work for Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Of course not. It's not caused by mouth breathing.

WindmillOfBones · 08/04/2025 19:23

I tried. But apparently I drool a lot and the tape I got kept coming off due to the drool. There was just drool everywhere.

It is worth listening to this podcast on this issue. You can certainly improve sleep apnoa with work on breathing and toning muscles in the airway.

Thank you for that!!

luckyluckyluck3 · 08/04/2025 20:32

My uncle does! His wife says it’s stopped him snoring, but that was a side effect. He did it because he was into wellness and he read it would give him better and more effective sleep - he thinks it has!

YouBelongWithMe · 09/04/2025 12:48

I did it last night! Found it super easy, wasn't at all hard to get used to.

My husband reports that I was still snoring "but it meant you couldn't talk pish when I was trying to sleep", so he is a fan regardless 🤣

How much tape is needed - I’m a bit feart to google, but does anyone have a description or diagram of what’s needed?

YouBelongWithMe · 09/04/2025 19:58

It's just like a circular plaster. It's not massive at all.

I was sceptical but tried the Amazon ones. Saw such an increase in my sleep score (Oura ring) particularly deep sleep that I’m now converted. And now using nose strips too. Probably for the best that I’m single at the moment 😁

Rockfordpeach · 09/04/2025 23:10

I did throw up recently while wearing the tape. In that I developed a sickness bug, woke up knowing I was going to be sick, pulled the tape off, threw up and lived to tell the tale

I also used to drool lots and the tape would peel off, ive learnt to stretch it and ensure its well around my lips and now its bone dry in the morning. I also have much better morning breath, my mouth still tastes minty from brushing before bed 😂

I felt the same, but I’ve been using Sterimar nasal spray before bed, then a few sniffs of Olbas stick, then put the tape on. More Olbas as needed. Easier to nose breathe now, it feels natural. And sleeping much better now, it had got to the point where I’d wake myself up by starting to snore.

My dh does not need asthma meds anymore after mouth taping at night, and doing a lot of work suggested by James Nestor and Patrick Mckeown in their excellent books. Previously he was on steroids daily and ventolin as necessary. He has been four years free of medication.

Correct breathing is so important to health. I find exercise much easier now I have addressed my disordered breathing when exercising. I don't mouth breath at night so don't need to tape but everyone else in the family does it.

Ollybob · 15/06/2025 07:40

With my skin I'd end up damaging my lips and a spots all around my mouth!
Possibly good in theory though.
I wonder if you could get something that keeps your mouth shut thats not sticky?

I just use a small piece of microporous tape, it’s pretty gentle, you might want to try it out … it’s cheap, and easy to find in any chemist, or the supermarket pharmacy section.

My next challenge is mouth breathing while exercising. Don’t realise I’m doing it sometimes.

This was the only thing that stopped my husbands snoring! Definitely recommend

Did it stop it right away?
Have been using for a few days, snoring has reduced a lot but not stopped completely according to a snore tracker
