Jim Reeves, Foster and Allen and Vera Lynn are some that I remember being played, although my parents didn’t play music very often. I seem to remember there being cassettes of brass bands too.

My sister is 12 years older than me, she was a teenager in the early 1970s and had quite a mixed musical taste back then. I remember her playing Simon and Garfunkel, Gilbert O’Sullivan and also Gilbert and Sullivan, The Beatles too and Mozart and Beethoven.

I had older cousins who were avid music listeners and were an influence on me, rather than my immediate family.

My dad was Blondie, Pink Floyd. Had a record player so all were on records.
My mum was Simon & Garfunkel and The Scorpions.
Classical like Chopin, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven were on too.
It was all mood dependent.
Although the Piano by Michael Nyman was my mums favourite and as soon as I was able that was learnt on the piano 😅

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/04/2025 10:10

Whatever was on Radio 2.

I'd come down in the mornings to get ready for school and I'm sure it had that sodding Chanson L'Amour (ra-ta-ta-ta-ta) wailing from it nearly every time as I quickly changed it to Capital for the next hour.

During school holidays, there would usually be a brief bit of something I could tolerate on there around 10am (she insisted on it going back there at 9).

I wasn't entirely cool aged 8 - I could let They're Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace and A Mouse Lived in a Windmill go unmoaned about.

SteaknSalad · 08/04/2025 10:30

My mum loved:
Muse
Radiohead
No Doubt/Gwen Stefani

Steps and S Club were a guilty pleasure!

My Dad listened to:
Kaiser Chiefs

They both liked:
Gorillaz
Robbie Williams
Blur

My father liked big band jazz. Duke Ellington, Count Basie. Singers like Sinatra and Tony Bennett with lush arrangements. He played trombone then switched to bass and played part time for dinner dance things.
Mum liked Tom Jones, Sinatra but listened to more pop like The Beatles. As I grew up she listened to Rod Stewart and other rock/pop things I listened to and knew quite a few bands.
