I've been really stupid today

I have a health condition. The NHS have been atrocious in the 15+ years I've had the condition. I've had a flare up for the past few months and I'm exhausted. The pain and blood is too much.

I've been looking at private hysterectomies and took out a loan for £11,000 today. I can afford the repayments, but still. I've been such a knob. I don't even know if I can get surgery because of my high bmi. I'm so stupid.

Is there a cooling off period for the loan?

Thebloodynine · 07/04/2025 18:02

You took out the loans before actually arranging a private appointment and finding out wait times, total actual cost and whether or not you are eligible? Um… pay the loan back in full immediately?

I think so.

You can repay the loan. You'll have to pay back some interest but it won't be a huge amount if you were able to pay the repayments. Don't touch the money until you know if you can get the operation.

Contact your loan provider, there is usually a cooling off period.

Then find a provider you wish to go with and begin your appointments and find out if you’re eligible for the surgery. I’d also check if you’re going to need any ongoing medication/treatment after if your GP will support this, they don’t have to, and you may be stuck paying private.

if your happy with it all and have the go ahead and final price you can always apply for a loan again.

Do not spend any of the money. Cancel the loan. Then find out whether you can actually get surgery and consider getting a new loan if appropriate.

I don’t think taking out a loan is outrageous. But I’d select a consultant first and explore the options. You could try weightloss injections for the weight. Use some of the money for the initial appointment and then put it in a savings account.

I know I've been so stupid. I was so desperate this afternoon, I just did it. I could pay off a few credit cards and a loan which has a high interest rate with it if I don't use it for surgery I suppose. I'm paying about £250 a month on credit card repayments and loan repayments at the moment, all minimum amounts each month.

You were desperate and not thinking straight. Bound to happen when you have been in pain for so long. Sounds like you dont need any more debt so contact the loan company ASAP to find out your options
