If you’re taking UPF out of your diet, have you lost weight?

Just this really. I’m keen to know if you have noticed a difference if you’ve cut back on ultra processed foods?

Yes.

I’ve cut out gluten and cut back on UPFs significantly.

Lost about 1st 4lbs since January.

I lost about a stone then it settled. I am still obese though
Although I am eating healthier and feel better I am eating more calories dense foods.

I have very little UPF but haven’t lost weight. I didn’t have much to start with but have cut it to very little now. No weight loss though. I do love my food and eat quite a bit so that’s why.

Yes. I'm not sure it's the lack of UPFs that's caused me to lose a stone - but now that I only eat biscuits or cake etc if I've gone to the bother of making them, I eat far less of them than I used to. When I decided to avoid UPFs, I also ate far more vegetables and fruit.

Yes, very noticeably and with no effort (apart from all the cooking)

Silsatrip · 06/04/2025 21:08

Yes. I went down 2 notches on my belt too

LillyPJ · 06/04/2025 21:08

P.S. That extra stone has stayed off for almost two years now.

anonymous98 · 06/04/2025 21:09

I actually gained when I started cooking from scratch.

Annoyingsquirrels · 06/04/2025 21:14

I lost 15kg really easily when I cut out upf and it has stayed off for almost 2 years. I no longer crave it (in fact it now tastes horrible to me), I have a lot more energy and cutting it out has even improved my mood.

XenoBitch · 06/04/2025 21:29

No, I gained. I made my own bread and ate far too much of it.

Howcloseisburnout · 07/07/2025 01:08

Yes but tbh upping your water intake is usually the best way to help with weight loss.
I’ve been amazed at all the things UPF is in. We’ve gone completely cold turkey and are so much healthier for it, even if it’s a lot more effort.

It is a lot of effort, and some days I just can’t be bothered but I stick with it. Sugar cravings completely gone.
i have don’t this a few times in the last few years, and determined to stick with it this time. I feel so much better and have lost bloating, and I’m only a week or so into this latest no upf journey.
I’m a long term vegan, so eat loads of tofu, pulses, vegetables, rice, grains, nuts and fruit. I allow myself to eat as much as I want, which is always less than when I’m eating sugar and junk as the cravings are less.

I have bulimia and the only way to not binge and purge is to eat clean, so I’m planning on this being life long this time - for my health.

I always lose weight, usually from about 10 stone to 9 stone. And I’m happy there. Better energy too, mental health always better.

What do you mean by 'things UPF is in? Is there a particular ingredient you are avoiding? I understoo UPF to be a type of foods but curious where people draw the line?
When does a processed food become Ultra?

When does a processed food become Ultra?

So if you imagine a potato is a potato, if you mash it it’s ‘processed’ because it’s gone through the process of being mashed. If you bought mash pre-made it would be ‘ultra processed’ because they add all sorts of chemically processed ingredients usually to add flavour, shelf life etc. It’s no longer just potato.

Anything that’s had anything you wouldn’t usually find naturally added will be UPF.
Another example is tomato ketchup.
UPF ketchup can have as little as 33% tomatoes condensed down to 3% in a bottle. The rest are various starches and gums to create the correct texture.
In a 550g bottle of ketchup there will have been 55g of tomatoes (then boiled and condensed down to 5g) leaving approximately 545g of chemically produced ingredients making up the rest of the bottle.

The book Ultra Processed People is great for explaining it and if you go on gov.uk there is a section on UPF as the government have identified its responsibility for the obesity rate.
